Mountain tourism in Kazakhstan and its development

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis examines the development of mountain tourism in Kazakhstan with a particular focus on the Almaty Mountain Cluster. The thesis combines a literature review with an overview of major mountain resorts, official statistical data for the period 2020-2025, and data from a questionnaire survey conducted in February and March 2026 (n = 100, snowball sampling). The analysis shows that tourism services and tourist arrivals have been increasing, while the growth of accommodation capacity has been slower, which creates additional pressure during peak periods in terms of access, safety, and environmental management. The results also indicate a strong concentration of tourism demand around Almaty, where Shymbulak represents the leading destination, while other resorts play a secondary role. Based on the findings, the thesis identifies the main challenges of mountain tourism development in Kazakhstan and outlines conditions for more balanced and sustainable growth.
