Translator strategies: two translations of the same source text

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to analyse and compare three different Czech translations of the same source text, which is The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde. Translations by J. Z. Novák from 1981, J. Drahokoupilová from 2011 and M. Žemla from 2014 were chosen for the purposes of this thesis. These texts were chosen primarily because there is a big time difference between Novák's and Žemla's translation, while Drahokoupilová's translation is a bilingual book meant primarily for English learners. The theoretical part of this thesis outlines the theory of equivalence, the skopos theory and target-oriented approach to translation. The analytical part of this thesis focuses primarily on the lexical and stylistic aspects of the translations. The final part summarises the findings from the analysis and provides evaluation of the translations.

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je zanalyzovat a porovnat tři odlišné české překlady stejného zdrojového textu, kterým je Šťastný princ od Oscara Wildea. Pro účely této analýzy byly vybrány české překlady od J. Z. Nováka z r. 1981, J. Drahokoupilové z r. 2011 a M. Žemly z r. 2014. Tyto texty byly vybrány především proto, že se v případě Nováka a Žemly jedná o překlady s velkým časovým odstupem mezi sebou a v případě Drahokoupilové jde o bilingvní text určený primárně studentům angličtiny. Teoretická část této práce se zabývá představením teorií ekvivalence, teorie tzv. skoposu a teorie cílově orientovaného přístupu k překladu. Analytická část se při zkoumání jednotlivých textů soustředí především na jejich lexikální a stylistické složky. V závěru práce čtenář nalezne shrnutí poznatků z analýzy a zhodnocení kvality jednotlivých překladů.
