Czech drag queen scene in anthropological perspective

Abstract:

Práce analyzuje kolektivní paměť a kolektivní identitu českých drag queen a travesti účinkujících. Závěry empirického výzkumu slouží k prezentaci vnitřní logiky současného sociálního pole "queer cross-gendering showbyznys". Empirický výzkum je založen na metodách zúčastněného pozorování, narativních, neformálních a polostrukturovaných rozhovorech. Teoretická část práce obsahuje obecný úvod do zkoumaného tématu drag queen a travesti účinkujících, teoretické koncepty a současný stav odborného bádání. Poté následují kapitoly představující teoretické koncepty kolektivní paměti, identity a queer memory. Poslední kapitola teoretické části obsahuje úvod do myšlenkového rámce P. Bourdieu, který je značnou inspirací pro praktickou část práce. Praktickou část práce zahajuje kapitola, která popisuje sociální pole "queer cross-gendering showbyznysu", s akcentací na autonomii sociálního pole. Následuje kapitola představující disparátní aktérské skupiny, jejichž členové sdílejí (a nesdílejí) stejné sociální pole a mezi nimiž je patrná disociace. Jmenovitě transgender osoby, travesti účinkující, drag queens a "drag queens sex hunters". Navazující část popisuje funkci symbolického a ekonomického kapitálu účinkujících ve vztahu k jejich postavení ve sledovaném sociálním poli. V následující části je představena kolektivní paměť účinkujících ve vztahu k předrevolučnímu období a ranému období českého travesti a dragu. Také jsou představeny ikonická místa a osobnosti českého travesti a dragu jako kolektivně-identitární uzel českého dragu a travesti. Tyto místa a osobnosti jsou důležitou formativní složkou českého dragu a travesti. Následuje sub-kapitola o referenčním rámci 90. let, která jsou prezentována jako "zlatá éra" a "éra svobody". Dále následuje představení funkce konceptu D.I.Y., jež moderuje symbolický boj o nejprestižnější pozice ve sledovaném sociálním poli. V závěru je prezentována role českého dragu a travesti ve vztahu ke kulturnímu aktivismu.

Abstract:

The thesis analyzes the collective memory and collective identity of Czech drag queens and travesties. The conclusions of the empirical research serve to present the internal logic of the current social field of "queer cross-gender show business". The empirical research is based on methods of participant observation, narrative, informal, and semi-structured interviews. The theoretical part of the work includes a general introduction to the topic of drag queens and travesties, theoretical concepts, and the current state of professional research. The following chapters introduce the theoretical concepts of collective memory, identity, and queer memory. The last chapter of the theoretical part includes an introduction to the theoretical framework of P. Bourdieu, which is a considerable inspiration for the practical part of the work. The practical part of the thesis begins with a chapter that describes the social field of "queer cross-gender show business", with an emphasis on the autonomy of the social field. The next chapter introduces disparate actor groups whose members share (and do not share) the same social field and between whom there is a dissociation, namely transgender persons, travesty performers, drag queens, and "drag queen sex hunters". The following section describes the function of symbolic and economic capital of the performers in relation to their position in the observed social field. The next section presents the collective memory of the performers in relation to the pre-revolutionary period and the early period of Czech travesty and drag. Iconic places and personalities of Czech travesty and drag are also presented as a collective-identity node of Czech drag and travesty. These places and personalities are an important formative component of Czech drag and travesty. A subchapter on the reference framework of the 1990s follows, which is presented as the "golden era" and the "era of freedom". Furthermore, the function of the D.I.Y. concept is introduced, which moderates the symbolic struggle for the most prestigious positions in the observed social field. Finally, the role of Czech drag and travesty in relation to cultural activism is presented.
