Genre and multimodal analysis of online video tutorial

Abstract:

The dissertation reports on a genre and multimodal analysis of educational video tutorials on infinitesimal calculus available at YouTube. The study is based on a corpus of 41 video tutorials and draws on a Hallidayan conception of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The present study specifies the genre of online video tutorial in terms of the context of the situation, identifies its significant features, both verbal and visual, and determines their functional associations with the situational characteristics. In order to determine the influence of the production circumstances, the distribution of the personal perspective is analysed. The study then examines the function of personal pronouns on the interpersonal level by using a fine-grained analysis of actual referents. The role of personal pronouns as strategic devices is then analysed, exemplified and discussed to determine the degree to which the pronouns play a strategic role or, alternatively, are merely the results of individual speakers' preferences. Multimodal analysis of the instructional design assesses primarily the involved modes and their interplay in order to determine the predominant mode.

Abstract:

Disertační práce pojednává o žánrové a multimodální analýze výukových video tutoriálů zaměřených na infinitezimální počet, jež jsou dostupné na platformě YouTube. Studie je založena na korpusu sestávajícím ze 41 video tutoriálů a vychází z Hallidayova pojetí systémově-funkční lingvistiky. Studie specifikuje žánr online video tutoriálu z hlediska situačního kontextu, identifikuje jeho podstatné rysy (jak verbální, tak vizuální) a určuje jejich funkční asociace se situačními charakteristikami. Analýza distribuce osobní perspektivy umožňuje určit vliv produkčních okolností. Pomocí detailní analýzy skutečných referentů se dále ve studii zjišťuje, jak fungují zájmena na interpersonální úrovni. Role osobních zájmen jako strategických prostředků je poté analyzována, ilustrována a diskutována, aby bylo zjištěno, do jaké míry hrají zájmena strategickou roli, nebo jsou pouze výsledkem preferencí jednotlivých mluvčích. Multimodální analýza instruktážního designu je zaměřena především na zapojené módy a jejich souhru se záměrem určit dominantní mód.
