Disability in Children´s Literature

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá tematikou handicapu v dětské literatuře, a to především autismem. V diplomové práci jsou analyzovány tři dětské knihy, které obsahují hlavní postavu s autismem, a to A Friend like Simon, Leah´s Voice a The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Důraz je kladen zejména na způsob, jakým jsou hlavní postavy s autismem představeny dětskému čtenáři. Zda jsou ve vybraných knihách dodrženy principy korektního zobrazování postav s autismem, je dílčím předmětem zkoumání této práce. Práce se také zabývá vhodností knih z hlediska věku cílových skupin čtenářů.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is dedicated to the theme of disability in children´s literature, particularly autism. A total of three children's books featuring main characters with autism are analysed, namely A Friend like Simon, Leah´s Voice and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. The focus of the analysis is aimed at individual portrayals of characters with autism and the strategies employed to introduce the protagonists with autism to child readers. Additional objective of the thesis is to find out, whether the principles of portrayals of characters with autism are observed in the selected books. The suitability of the books in terms of the age of the target audience is also addressed.
