Translating Feminist Discourse: Translation and Analysis of Lynn Abrams' "The Making of Modern Woman: Europe 1789-1918"

Abstract:

Tato práce se skládá z analýzy diskurzu genderové a historické studie Lynn Abramsové nazvané “The Making of Modern Woman: Europe1789-1918” a z analýzy jejich překladů v podání Evy Lajkepové a autorky této práce. Analýza diskurzu je zaměřená především na to, do jaké míry je dílo Lynn Abramsové formální, neosobní a srozumitelné. Zabývá se i způsoby, jakými Abramsová kompenzuje omezení písemného projevu a nedostatek spoluúčasti čtenářů na psaní textu. Překladová analýza zkoumá způsoby, jakými překladatelé zachovávají zmiňované prvky ve svých překladech. Tato část práce se dále zabývá některými specifičtějšími rysy procesu překládání, jako je například změna aktivního a pasivního tvaru sloves, změna slovosledu, překlad genderové terminologie, atd. Oba překlady kapitoly “Change and Continuity” od Evy Lajkepové i autorky této práce jsou uvedeny na konci práce.

Abstract:

This thesis analyses the discourse of Lynn Abrams’ gender and historical study “The Making of Modern Woman: Europe 1789-1918”, and it also analyses its translation by Eva Lajkepová and the author of the thesis. The discourse analysis focuses on the degree of formality, impersonality, and accessibility reached by Lynn Abrams in her writing. It also examines the ways in which she compensates the limitations of written channel and the lack of readers’ participation in the text. In the translation analysis, the thesis centres on the ways in which the translators preserve the features of Abrams’ text. This part of the thesis further investigates some more specific features of the translating process, such as transferring the active and passive voices, manipulating with the FSP, translating the gender terminology, etc. The translation of the chapter “Change and Continuity” by Eva Lajkepová and the author of this paper are included at the end of the thesis.
