Great Britain and / versus Europe. Analysis of the development of the UK approach to the European integration process after 1945, considering British Euroscepticism and the long-term and short-term causes of the so-called Brexit.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá přístupem Velké Británie k evropským integračním snahám od dvacátých let dvacátého století až do současnosti s přihlédnutím k tzv. brexitu. Práce analyzuje vývoj britsko-evropských vztahů, britskou účast v jednotlivých integračních organizacích a hledá důvody specifického jednání Británie v otázkách integrace. Hlavní důvod ke změně britského postoje nachází ve stále se zhoršující hospodářské situaci země a nárůstu prosperity zemí Šestky. Za hlavní problém provázející celé integrační období i následné referendum považuje otázku britské suverenity a dlouhodobý specifický postoj Britů vůči kontinentální Evropě. Rozebírá také témata populismu, nacionalismu a euroskepticismu, která jsou důležitá při pohledu na vývoj postoje britské společnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the approach of Great Britain to the European integration efforts from the 1920s to the present, considering the so-called Brexit. The paper analyzes the development of British-European relations, British participation in individual integration organizations, and seeks the reasons for Britain's specific approach to the integration issues. The main reason for the change in British attitude is the deteriorating economic situation of the country and the prosperity of the countries of the Six. The UK's sovereignty and the long-standing specific attitude of the British towards continental Europe are considered as the main issue surrounding the entire integration period and the following referendum. It also discusses the subjects of populism, nationalism and Euroscepticism, which are important in view of the attitudes of British society.
