Emotion discourse analysis and role of fear in the foreign policy discourse of the Baltic states after the annexation of Crimea

Abstract:

Anexe Krymu v roce 2014 byla baltskými státy vnímána jako jasné znamení, že se Moskva snaží rozšířit svou sféru vlivu a realizovala tak jejich nejhorší obavy od konce Studené války a vyhlášení nezávislosti v roce 1991. Ačkoliv se baltské státy plně integrovaly do západních bezpečnostních struktur (NATO a EU) a jsou již více než dvě desetiletí stabilními demokraciemi, právě tato událost s celou veřejností i politickými představiteli dost zatřásla. Otázkou je, jaký obecný diskurz po této události ve společnosti zavládl a zda byl vyjádřeními politických autorit podporován a nějakým způsobem motivován. Cílem této práce je identifikovat emoce, zejména emoci strachu v tomto společensky přijatém diskurzu a zařadit je do historického a mezinárodněpolitického kontextu. K naplnění tohoto cíle je v práci využita metoda emocionální diskurzní analýzy, která je aplikována na deset oficiálních textů reprezentujících diskurz zahraniční politiky baltských států po roce 2014.

Abstract:

the Baltic states perceive the annexation of Crimea in 2014 as a clear sign that Moscow is trying to expand its sphere of influence and thus realize their worst fears since the end of the Cold War and the declaration of independence in 1991. Although the Baltic states have fully integrated into Western security structures (NATO and the EU) and have been stable democracies for more than two decades, this event has shook the public as well as high politicians. The question is, what general discourse prevailed in society after this event and whether it was supported and in some way motivated by the statements of the political authorities. The aim of this work is to identify emotions, especially emotions of fear in this socially accepted discourse and to incorporate it in the historical and international political context. To fulfill this goal, the work uses method of emotional discourse analysis, which is applied to ten official texts representing the discourse of foreign policy of the Baltic States after the events in 2014.
