Abstract:

Práce se zabývá zobrazením války v Bosně a Herzegovině ve vybraných amerických a britských filmech. Analyzoval jsem filmy: John Moore a jeho Behind Enemy Lines (2001), Michael Winterbotton a Welcome to Sarajevo (1997), David Atwood a Shot Through the Heart (1998) a film Predraga Antonijeviće Savior (1998). Ve filmech se objevovalo stereotypní zobrazování regionu a jeho obyvatel, které můžeme nalézt v americké a britské literatuře, filmu a masových mediích už od dob osvícenství. Balkán byl ve všech filmech představován jako most mezi civilizací Orientu a Západem. Na jedné straně nemá kouzlo Orientu, na druhé mu však chybí „civilizovanost“ Západu. Filmy věnované bosenské válce zobrazují Sarajevo jako bývalé rušné a kosmopolitní město, zatím co venkov je prezentovaný jako krásný, mystický, ale nebezpečný. Bosenští Srbové jsou zobrazeni jako inherentně nacionalističtí, krvežízniví lidé, žijící v minulosti. Druhá dvě etnika většinou splývají do jednoho celku, který se chová i vypadá jako lidé žijící v Západních zemích, kteří byli okolnostmi donuceni chopit se zbraní. První část diplomové práce předkládá stručný přehled příčin, průběhu, a výsledků války v Bosně a Herzegovině a přehled toho, jak se vyvíjel celý obraz regionu v americké a britské literatuře, filmu a masových mediích. Druhá část je už konkrétní analýzou filmů. Práce je zakončená závěrem, který se zabýva analýzou výsledkú práce azkoumá možné příčiny.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with depiction of the Bosnian War in American and British film, in particular Behind Enemy Lines (2001 dir John Moore), Welcome to Sarajevo (1997 dir Michael Winterbotton), Shot through the Heart (1998 dir David Atwood) and Savior (1998 dir. Predrag Antonijević). In these films, we found the stereotypical depiction of the whole Balkan region and its inhabitants, that was present in American and British Literature since the enlightenment era. The Balkans was presented in most of the films as the bridge connecting the Orient and the Western civilization. However, Balkans on one hand does not possess the magic and exoticism of the Orient, on the other hand it fails to be as developed as the West. Sarajevo is presented as once a bustling and cosmopolitan city, now destroyed by the war. The Bosnian countryside is shown as a beautiful, mysterious, but dangerous place to be. Bosnian Serbs are depicted as inherently nationalistic, bloodthirsty people living in the past. Bosnian Croats and Bosnian Muslims are blended into the one entity, which behaves and looks like people living in the Western countries and were forced to take arms. First part of my thesis presents brief overview of the causes, course and the outcomes of the Bosnian War. Then we look at the evolution of the image of the whole region in the American and British literature, film and mass media. Second part, is the analysis of the particular films as well as the summary of the common features found in them as well as reflection on the common features. The thesis ends with conclusion, where i summarize the finding
