Voluntary associations' activity in the fortress town of Josefov from the second half of the 19th century to 1939

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá spolkovou činností v pevnostním městě Josefov od druhé poloviny 19. století do roku 1939. První část práce nastiňuje podmínky pro vznik a rozvoj spolkové činnosti v Českých zemích, zvláště pak v Josefově v polovině 19. století. Ve druhé části jsou uvedeny vůbec první spolky ve městě, které zde po prusko-rakouské válce roku 1866 podnítily rozvoj společenského života. Na jejich činnost navázaly spolky obranné a dělnické, jejichž podpůrná a národně-vzdělávací činnost byla důležitá pro národní uvědomění josefovského obyvatelstva. Stejně tak důležitá byla práce tělocvičných a sportovních jednot v čele se Sokolem, jejichž význam je popsán ve čtvrté části. Největší spolková smršť nastala v Josefově po roce 1918, kdy tu vznikaly desítky různorodých organizací, a právě těm se věnuje závěrečná část práce.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with voluntary association activities in the fortress town of Josefov from the second half of the 19th century to 1939. The first part of the thesis outlines the conditions for the emergence and development of association activity in the Czech lands, especially in Josefov in the mid-19th century. The second part presents the first ever associations in the town, which stimulated the development of social life after the Prusso-Austrian War in 1866. Their activities were followed by defence and workers' associations, whose supporting and national-educational activities were important for the national awareness of the population of Josefov. Equally important was the work of sport organizations headed by the Sokol, whose impact is described in the fourth section. The biggest influx of voluntary associations in Josefov occurred after 1918, when dozens of diverse organisations were founded. These organisations are the subject of the final part of the thesis.
