Montréal's Strangers in the Works by Monique Larue and Monique Proulx

Abstract:

The master's thesis deals with the analysis of identity changes of foreigners and native Montrealers on the basis of their mutual contact and coexistence, specifically in the works of two Quebec authors Monique LaRue and Monique Proulx. In the beginning of the thesis, the development of immigration to the province of Quebec (1950-present) - as well as immigration policy and attitudes of native Quebecers towards foreigners and the situation of immigrants in terms of languages, work and education - are presented. The theoretical part ends with a presentation of migration literature, which describes the process of integration of foreigners and the transformation of their identity, and the cosmopolitan environment of Montreal, where the phenomenons of transculture and transnational identity emerge. The analysis itself is first placed in the context of the lives and works of both authors and a brief account of the plots of both works. Then it deals with the analysis of the city of Montreal and its impact on the population, Montrealers' attitudes towards foreigners and changes in foreigners' identity during their integration, leading to a new transnational identity.

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá rozborem identitárních změn cizinců a rodilých Montrealanů na základě jejich vzájemného kontaktu a soužití, konkrétně v dílech dvou quebeckých autorek Monique LaRue a Monique Proulx. Na úvod práce je představen vývoj imigrace do provincie Quebeku (1950-současnost), dále imigrační politika a postoje rodilých Quebečanů vůči cizincům a situace imigrantů z hlediska jazyků, práce a vzdělání. Teoretická část je zakončena představením migrační literatury, která popisuje proces integrace cizinců a transformace jejich identity, a kosmopolitního prostředí Montréalu, kde vznikají fenomény transkultury a transnacionální identity. Samotná analýza je nejprve zasazena do kontextu životů a tvorby obou autorek a stručného vyprávění dějů obou děl, následně se zabývá rozborem charakteru města Montréalu a jeho vlivu na obyvatele, postoji Montrealanů vůči cizincům a změnami identity cizinců během jejich integrace, která vede ke vzniku nové transnacionální identity.
