Diffusion processes

Abstract:

This master's thesis deals with diffusion processes, with its main goal being the connection of the perspective of stochastic analysis with the approach of partial differential equations. In the introduction, it explains the basic concepts of stochastic analysis and then proceeds to study diffusion processes, for which the theoretical perspective is complemented by trajectory simulations. By introducing infinitesimal moments, it moves to the perspective of partial differential equations, which leads to the key concept of the Fokker-Planck equation. For simpler processes, the Fokker-Planck equation is solved analytically using the Fourier transform method. For more complex processes, it is solved numerically using the explicit finite difference method, which is also implemented in the Python language. 3D probability density functions are included in the appendix of the thesis, and their 2D views are incorporated in the text. The accuracy of the numerical approximation of the density is evaluated using graphical and numerical indicators. Based on the plotted characteristics, the necessary number of trajectories and the length of the time and space steps required to achieve acceptable accuracy are assessed.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá difúzními procesy, přičemž jejím hlavním cílem je propojení pohledu stochastické analýzy s přístupem parciálních diferenciálních rovnic. V úvodu vysvětluje základní pojmy stochastické analýzy a následně postupuje ke studiu difúzních procesů, pro které je teoretický pohled doplněn o simulace trajektorií. Zavedením infinitezimálních momentů přechází k pohledu parciálních diferenciálních rovnic, ve kterém se dostává ke klíčovému pojmu Fokker-Planckovy rovnice. Pro jednodušší procesy je Fokker-Planckova rovnice řešena analyticky za pomoci metody Fourierovy transformace. Pro složitější procesy je řešena numericky pomocí explicitní metody konečných diferencí, která je implementována i v jazyce Python. 3D hustoty pravděpodobnosti přechodu jsou vloženy v příloze práce a jejich 2D náhledy jsou začleněny do textu práce. Přesnost numerické aproximace hustoty je vyhodnocena pomocí grafických a číselných ukazatelů. Na základě vykreslených charakteristik je posouzen potřebný počet trajektorií a délka časového a prostorového kroku k dosažení akceptovatelné přesnosti.
