Biodegradation of the dyes by mixed cultures of ligninolytic fungi and yeast organisms

Abstract:

The work was focused on the investigation into the interactions between ligninolytic fungi and yeast or bacterial microorganisms during biodegradation of dyes in mixed cultures. In addition to dye decolorization, the activities of ligninolytic enzymes were measured, as well as the growth and amounts of microorganisms involved. The biofilms were analyzed using scanning electron- and fluorescence microscopy with the aim to understand the structure of the complex biofilm formed. The effects of solid carrier for immobilization, growth medium composition and aeration on dye decolorization were investigated with the aim to find convenient conditions for studying the decolorization activity of the ligninolytic fungus in the presence of the yeast microorganism. In such an optimized mixed culture of Pleurotus ostreatus and the yeast Candida zeylanoides, the chemical composition of the growth medium during decolorization of the Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) azo dye was analyzed and, on the basis of the individual degradation products detected, the mechanisms of simultaneous degradation of RO16 by the two microorganisms in the mixed culture were characterized.
