Reception of media violence by students of a selected elementary school

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou vnímání násilí v médiích ze strany prepubescentních žáků základních škol. Formou pilotní studie se snaží ověřit senzitivitu a postoje respondentů vůči násilným mediálním obsahům. Ukázalo se, že se u respondentů projevila desenzitizace vůči násilí v předložených videoukázkách i vůči násilí obecně. Znecitlivění se také promítlo do postoje silných konzumentů médií, kteří zastávali názor, že násilí v médiích nijak neprožívají, na rozdíl od konzumentů slabých. Dá se tedy říci, že čím více respondenti sledují televizní obsahy a hrají počítačové hry, tím méně jsou citliví vůči násilí. Nepotvrdilo se ovšem, že silní konzumenti médií častěji než konzumenti slabí považují násilí za vhodný nástroj k řešení konfliktu. Dále jsme se pokusili zavést koncept hudebního kapitálu jakožto indikátor vztahu respondentů k hudbě a ověřit jeho vliv na citlivost respondentů vůči násilí v médiích. Tato souvislost ale nebyla prokázána; počet hodin strávený konzumací násilí v médiích má na citlivost respondentů výrazně vyšší vliv. Ukázalo se, že výše hudebního kapitálu souvisí s výší kulturního kapitálu, jak ho definoval Pierre Bourdieu. Výsledkem je tak pilotní studie, která připravuje půdu pro další výzkum problematiky vlivu hudebního kapitálu na senzitivitu prepubescentů vůči násilí v médiích.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis deals with the reception of media violence on the part of prepubescent pupils in primary schools. Thesis tries to verify the sensitivity and respondents' attitudes towards violent media content in the form of a pilot study. It turned out that the respondents showed desensitization to violence in the submitted videos and against violence in general. Desensitization is also reflected in the attitudes of heavy viewers of the media, who argued that they were not expressed by media violence, unlike light viewers. We can say that the more respondents watch TV content and play computer games, the less sensitive they are to violence. However it wasn’t confirmed that heavy viewers often than light viewers consider violence as an appropriate tool to resolve conflict. We also tried to introduce the concept of musical capital as an indicator of the relationship of the respondents to the music and to check its effect on the sensitivity of respondents to violence in the media. This relationship wasn’t confirmed; the number of hours spent consuming media had higher impact on the sensitivity of respondents. It turned out that the amount of musical capital related to the amount of cultural capital, as Pierre Bourdieu defined it. The result is a pilot study that paves the way for further research on the influence of musical capital on the sensitivity of pre-pubescents to violence in the media.
