Reflection of time orientation in narrative identity (Episodic stance toward narrative identity)

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá vztahem narativní identity, časové orientace a tzv. epizodického postoje k vlastní identitě. Práce představuje jednotlivé teorie a snaží se v nich identifikovat problematické body. Porovnává filozofický a psychologický přístup k narativní identitě a kriticky hodnotí jednotlivá kritéria narativní identity. Dále ukazuje na spojitost narativní identity s orientací na minulost a s orientací na budoucnost. Představuje také problematický vztah narativní identity a orientace na přítomnost. Poté se práce obrací k teorii epizodické osoby, identifikuje jako stěžejní bod epizodického postoje materialistický světonázor a zaměření na smyslovost, v čemž je identifikována spojitost s orientací na přítomnost. Je obhajována teze o variabilitě míry přivlastňování si svého životního příběhu a tvrzení, že epizodický postoj nevede nutně k sociálně-patologickému chování. Problematizováno je normativní tvrzení autorů časové orientace o nadřazenosti vyvážené časové orientace.

Abstract:

This paper deals with the relation between narrative identity, time orientation and so called episodic stance towards one’s own identity. Paper presents these theories along with their questionable points. It compares philosophical and psychological approach to the subject of narrative identity and critically reviews the criteria of narrative identity. Further it shows how the narrative identity is linked to past-orientation and future-orientation. It presents also the problematic relation between narrative identity and present-orientation. Further on the paper presents the theory of episodic person and identifies materialistic worldview and sensuousness as the fundaments of this stance, conecting in that way epiodicity with present-orientation. The thesis claiming difference among people in a degree in which one´s life story is appropriated is defended as well as the thesis claiming episodic stance as not leading necessarily to socio-pathological behavior. The normative claim of the authors of the theory of time orientation, stating superiority of balanced time orientation, is questioned.
