Motivation of students for engagement in voluntary internship

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je odhalit, jaká je motivace studentů k absolvování dobrovolných stáží. Vzhledem k zasazení tématu do kontextu specifické neziskové organizace je v teoretické části podstatné nastínit organizační kontext výkonu stáže a také, kdo je studentem a co je to stáž. Stěžejní teoretickou částí je kapitola o motivaci. Motivace je nazírána jako proces jak z hlediska obecných teorií, tak i z perspektivy různých teorií pracovní motivace. Důraz je mimo jiné kladen na vymezení motivů jakožto hybatelů motivace. Motivy jsou popisovány ve třech rovinách – v rovině obecných kategorií, v rovině motivů k dobrovolné činnosti a motivů k pracovní činnosti. Metodologická část práce se zaměřuje na objasnění kvalitativní výzkumné strategie, dotazování, tj. metodu sběru dat, a techniku polostrukturovaného rozhovoru. Pro výběr respondentů byl zvolen prostý účelový výběr. V empirické části jsou interpretovány a prezentovány zjištěné informace, které přispívají k objasnění motivace studentů k absolvování dobrovolné stáže. Stěžejním poznatkem práce je to, že studenti vstupují do XY s motivy, které korespondují s dimenzemi jejich motivačního profilu a které jsou v průběhu stáže pozitivně podporovány organizačními faktory, a proto se daří studentům naplňovat cíle, se kterými do XY přicházeli. Závěrem jsou popsána doporučení pro konkrétní zkoumanou organizaci, která však mohou sloužit i jako inspirace jiným organizacím.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to discover what the motivation of students for engagement in voluntary intership is. The topic is set in the context of a specific non-profit organization, therefore it is essential to outline the organizational context of the intership in the theoretical part. Furthermore, it is important to describe who a student is and what an intership is. The fundamental segment of the theoretical part is the chapter about motivation. Motivation is observed as a process, both from the point of view of general theories and different theories of motivation to work. The emphasis is also put on defining motives as the origins of motivation. The motives are described on three levels – the level of general categories, the level of motivation for voluntary work and the level of motivation to work. The methodology part of the thesis is focused on clarifying the qualitative research strategy, questioning – e.g. the method of collecting data and the technique of semi-structured dialogue. The choice of respondents was based on purposive sampling. The empirical part includes interpretation and presentation of discovered information which help to clarify the motivation of students for engagement in voluntary intership. The most crucial finding of this work is the fact that students enter XY with motives which are in accordance with dimensions of their motivational profile, and which are positively supported by the organizational factors during the intership. Therefore, the students are succesful at achieving the goals which they had at the time they entered XY. Finally, suggestions for the concrete observed organization are given. However, these suggestions can inspire other organizations as well.
