Language contact on Reunion island: language choice strategies in Le Letchi Amer's videos

Abstract:

This master’s diploma thesis deals with the mutual relation between the French and Creole languages on the French island Réunion in the Indian Ocean. Based on the example of transcribed videos concerning the insular daily life created by a local youtuber nicknamed Le Letchi Amer, the research examines speakers’ strategies in the processes of language code selection and code switching. Furthermore, the research also investigates the interconnections between a selected language and socio-cultural stereotypes in use. The theoretical part aims at defining the key terms related to the contact of languages, the Réunion Creole characteristics, selection and code switching, including the processes of borrowing and the speakers’ concept of stereotyping. The terminus a quo for the analysis is a corpus of 12 videos made in the years 2013 to 2015, which consists of approximately 84 minutes of sketches and the spoken word. Firstly, the analysis investigates the speaker’s language selection with regard to context and content of the messages being conveyed. Secondly, the research focuses on code switching within the scope of a specific speech performance and examines the reasons for language transitions. In addition, this part describes Creole borrowings used in local French and the degree of incorporation of these words into French dictionaries. The vast majority of the words is not included in selected dictionaries. The last part of the analysis, based on individual utterances, deals with speakers’ stereotypical images typically associated with the language as well as the whole language community. The outcome corresponds with the different statutes of both languages in the Réunion society and the unequal community perception within the relation of the locals of Réunion and the French from metropolitan France.

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá vzájemným vztahem francouzštiny a kreolštiny na francouzském ostrově Réunion v Indickém oceánu. Na příkladu transkribovaných videí týkajících se života na ostrově z dílny místního youtubera přezdívaného Le Letchi Amer je poukázáno především na strategie mluvčích při výběru jazykových kódů a jejich případné střídání či míchání. Zkoumáno je také propojení vybraného jazyka a použitých sociokulturních stereotypů. V teoretické části vymezujeme základní pojmy vztahující se ke kontaktu jazyků, charakteristice réunionské kreolštiny, výběru a střídání jazykových kódů včetně výpůjček a procesu stereotypizace v představách mluvčích. Východiskem pro analýzu se stal korpus 12 autorových videí z let 2013 až 2015, obsahující přibližně 84 minut scének mluveného slova. V průběhu analýzy je nejprve zkoumán výběr jazyka mluvčím s ohledem na kontext a obsah sdělení. Hypotéza, že francouzština dominuje formálním konverzacím, se potvrdila jen částečně. V druhé řadě se práce zaměřuje na střídání jazykových kódů v rámci konkrétní promluvy a zkoumá důvody přechodů do jednotlivých jazyků. Dále jsou popsány kreolské výpůjčky užité v rámci francouzské promluvy a míra jejich začlenění do francouzských slovníků. Převážná část nemá nebo neodpovídá zastoupení ve vybraných slovnících. Poslední analýza se zabývá stereotypními reprezentacemi v představách mluvčích spojených s jazykem i s celou jazykovou komunitou, které vyplývají z jednotlivých výpovědí. Výsledek odpovídá rozdílným statutům obou jazyků v rámci réunionské společnosti i nerovnému vnímání komunit ve vztahu Réunionců a Francouzů z metropolitní Francie.
