Attitude of the male protagonists to the female characters in the novels by Michel Houellebecq

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the attitude of all protagonists by Michel Houellebecq towards the female characters. The theoretical part is based on sociological and gender studies of which authors are particularly Gilles Lipovetsky and François de Singly who describe the changes and the effects concerning the emancipation and to the women’s position in the modern society. The opening of the practial part is dedicated to the interpretation of the names of particular characters because the names of protagonists, as same as of their female opposites, hide oftentimes the important symbolism. The dissertation researches also if the protagonist develops by the time and becomes so, from the cold even heartless postmodern individual, the man able to love. The following part looks for the reasons of the decomposition of the relationship between man and woman in all of the author’s novels, the causes of this decline reflet the contemporary phenomena frequently related to the woman emancipation. The next chapters analyse protagonist’s progress in his perception of woman in physical and professional or social aspect and interpret the relation between the protagonist and his mother because this relation is probably behind his warped perception of woman. The last chapter is devoted to researching of an autobiographical elements and common parallels in the relationship of the protagonist or author and the woman in general.

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá postojem všech protagonistů Michela Houellebecqa vůči ženským postavám. Teoretická část je postavena na sociologických a genderových studiích, jejichž autory jsou zejména Gilles Lipovetsky a François de Singly, kteří popisují změny a dopady týkající se emancipace a postavení žen v novodobé společnosti. Úvod praktické části je věnován výkladům jmen jednotlivých postav, neboť jména protagonistů, stejně jako jejich ženských protějšků, v sobě často ukrývají podstatnou symboliku. Práce dále zkoumá, zda-li se protagonista postupem času vyvíjí, a stává se tak z chladného až bezcitného postmoderního individua člověkem schopným lásky. Následující část hledá důvody rozpadu vztahu mezi mužem a ženou ve všech autorových románech, příčiny tohoto úpadku odráží současné fenomény týkající se často právě ženské emancipace. Další kapitoly analyzují protagonistův progres ve vnímání ženy po fyzické i profesionální či sociální stránce a interpretují vztah mezi protagonistou a jeho matkou, neboť právě tento vztah pravděpodobně stojí za jeho pokřiveným vnímáním ženy. Poslední kapitola je věnována hledání autobiografických prvků a společných paralel ve vztahu protagonisty či autora a ženy obecně.
