Translator Sociology: Who Works for Czech Translation Agencies?

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje tématu sociologie překladatele a zaměřuje se zejména na překladatele spolupracující s českými překladatelskými agenturami, které analyzuje na pozadí současné situace na českém překladatelském trhu. První, spíše teoreticky orientovaná část této práce mapuje dějinný vývoj translatologie s ohledem na osobu překladatele a sleduje cestu, jež vedla k vývoji oboru sociologie překladatele. Také se zaměřuje na hlavní sociologické trendy, které silně ovlivnily translatologii během posledních dvaceti let, zejména na Teorii polí, jejímž autorem je Pierre Bourdieu. Druhá část diplomové práce, která je spíše prakticky orientována, má dvě sekce. První krátce nastiňuje současnou situaci českých překladatelských agentur a překladatelského trhu všeobecně, druhá prezentuje výsledky výzkumu zaměřeného na osobu překladatele spolupracujícího s českými překladatelskými agenturami. Zde lze najít profil prototypického překladatele tohoto typu, jeho postoje, zvyklosti a pracovní návyky, jehož vytvoření bylo hlavním cílem této práce. Zjištěné charakteristické vlastnosti jsou prezentovány s ohledem na situaci českého překladatelského trhu.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis is devoted to the topic of translator sociology and examines a person of a translator working for Czech translation agencies on the background of the current translation market situation. The first – theoretically oriented – part of the thesis focuses on the gradual development of the translation studies throughout the history and its way towards the translator sociology. Besides, it also deals with the sociological turn in translation studies within the last two decades and summarizes the most influential sociological trends in translation studies, with special attention paid to Pierre Bourdieu’s Field Theory. The second – more practically oriented – part of the thesis has two subparts. First, it briefly depicts the current situation concerning Czech translation agencies and the Czech translation market, in general. Second, it describes the research examining the person of a translator working for Czech translation agencies and provides a profile of such a prototypical translator, his/her approaches, habitual behaviour and daily routines. The relation between some of the discovered characteristics and the translation market situation are partially stressed. This profile creation stood for the main aim of the thesis.
