A Survey of Grammatical Gender of Inanimate Referents in Electronic Corpora

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá studiem gramatického rodu neživých podstatných jmen v angličtině. Jejím cílem je analyzovat četnost výskytu vybraných substantiv v mužském nebo ženském rodě v porovnání se středním rodem. Výzkum byl proveden ve dvou korpusech, v Britském národním korpusu (BNC) a v Korpusu současné americké angličtiny (COCA). Gramatický rod byl podložen pomocí koreferenčního schématu zájmen třetí osoby s vybranými podstatnými jmény. Zkoumání bylo provedeno vzhledem k následujícím aspektům: vzdálenost mezi substantivem a k němu odkazujícím zájmenem, žánr a doba vzniku textu.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s diploma thesis is concerned with realization of grammatical gender in inanimate nouns in English. The aim of the analysis is a comparison of frequency of occurrence of selected nouns in masculine or feminine gender and in neuter. The research was carried out in two electronic corpora, namely in the British National Corpus and the Corpus of Contemporary American English. Grammatical gender was evidenced by the pattern of 3rd person pronoun coreference of selected inanimate nouns. The investigation was carried out in the context of these variables: distance between the noun and pronoun, genre and time period of the text.
