The role of socioeconomic status in the prevalence of overweight/obesity - a comparison of Latin American and European countries

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo zjistit, zda rozdílná socioekonomická úroveň zemí ovlivňuje odlišným způsobem vývoj prevalence nadváhy a obezity u dospělých obyvatel vybraných zemí Latinské Ameriky a Evropy. Pro porovnání byly vybrány Mexiko, Brazílie a Dominikánská republika z oblasti Latinské Ameriky a z evropských zemí Česká republika, Polsko a Maďarsko. Pro porovnání byly zvoleny ukazatele HDP, HDI, míra nezaměstnanosti, procentuální podíl městské populace a prevalence nadváhy a obezity v období let 2006–2016. Pro Evropu byla zjištěna přímá závislost mezi prevalencí nadváhy/obezity HDP, HDI i urbanizací, zatímco s nezaměstnaností byla zjištěna nepřímá závislost. V Latinské Americe byla přímá závislost prevalence nadváhy/obezity prokázána pouze v případě HDI. Přímá závislost pak byla zjištěna pro oba regiony pouze u HDI a HDP. Analýza dále ukázala, že tempo růstu HDP, HDI i prevalence nadváhy a obezity je nejrychlejší v Latinské Americe.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to investigate whether different socioeconomic levels of countries influence differently the prevalence of overweight and obesity in adults in selected Latin American and European countries. The countries selected for comparison were Mexico, Brazil and the Dominican Republic from the Latin American region and the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary from the European countries. The indicators chosen for comparison were GDP, HDI, unemployment rate, percentage of urban population and prevalence of overweight and obesity in the period 2006-2016. For Europe, a direct relationship was found between overweight/obesity prevalence GDP, HDI and urbanization, while an inverse relationship was found with unemployment. In Latin America, a direct dependence of overweight/obesity prevalence was found only for HDI. A direct relationship was then found for both regions only for HDI and GDP. The analysis further showed that the growth rates of GDP, HDI and overweight/obesity prevalence are fastest in Latin America.
