Life losses and the strategies for managing them in the old age: Widowing

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá tématem ovdovění ve stáří s ohledem na strategie, které umožňují tuto životní ztrátu zvládnout. Jejím hlavním cílem je zjistit, jakými způsoby senioři zvládají období po úmrtí životního partnera a jaký význam v tomto období připisují formální a neformální pomoci. V obecné části jsou popsány základní pojmy a teoretická východiska práce. Jsou zde vymezeny pojmy stárnutí a stáří, ovdovění jako krize a vysvětlen význam manželství v seniorském věku. Dále jsou shrnuty faktory působící na adaptaci na vdovství. Jsou prezentovány demografické údaje týkající se témat vdovství, sňatečnost a rozvodovost v seniorské populaci. Výzkumná část se zaměřuje na porozumění situaci ovdovělých seniorů, respektive strategiím, které jim pomáhají jejich situaci zvládnout. Druhým tématem výzkumné práce je význam sociální podpory po ztrátě životního partnera ve stáří, konkrétně pomoci formální a neformální. Kvalitativní výzkum u osmi ovdovělých seniorů byl prováděn kombinací dvou metod ? pozorování a semistrukturovaného interview. Z analýzy dat vyplývá, že strategie seniorů vesměs vedly k úspěšnému vyrovnání se se ztrátou životního partnera. Neformální sítě mají v tomto období nezastupitelnou roli. Význam hospicové péče vystupuje v roli formálního systému pomoci výrazněji než ostatní zdroje.

Abstract:

The following diploma thesis deals with the topic of widowing in later years, specifically with the strategies of coping with this life event. Its primary aim is to find out how the elderly manage the event of loosing a life-long partner and what the role of formal and informal help is at this stage. In the introductory part of this work general definitions of essential terms will be covered in this area as well as theoretical background for this work. The terms such as aging, age, widowing as a crisis, and the importance of marriage in perspective to age are explained. In addition the thesis recognizes different factors which influence the adaptation when elderly find themselves in a new situation: widowhood. Demographic data with an emphasis on widowhood, marriage and divorce rates in senior citizen groups is also included. The research part of this work is based on understanding the situation of a newly widowed person and on the strategies that help him deal with such a sudden change in his life. The second viewpoint of the research is focused on the role of social benefits or social care with the distinction of formal and informal help. The actual research was conveyed by a semi-structured interview of eight widowed seniors. Observation also took its part in researching. Analysis of the acquired data shows that all the strategies that were used lead to the recovery of the widowed person. Family played an undisputable role, as well as friends and neighbors of the widowed as a part of the informal help. Hospice care stands out of the formal help net.
