The Prešov Jewish Museum (1928–1942). History, collection, ideas, personalities and places

Abstract:

The Jewish Museum in Prešov is one of the yet underrated treasures of Jewish cultural heritage in the territory of today’s Slovakia. It originated after an unexpected discovery of former prayer room from the beginning of the 19th century in 1928. The aim of the dissertation thesis was to present the social and historical framework of origin and development of European Jewish museums and collecting Judaica, to put the JMP into context of these structures on the basis of knowledge of its history and collection as well as to map the presentation of collections at exhibitions pre (Early Art in Slovakia) and post World War 2 (The Precious Legacy, Shalom). In its extent and focus, the thesis is the most comprehensive work about Jewish ritual objects from the territory of today’s Slovakia, as well as collecting and exhibiting thereof.

Abstract:

Dizertačná práce predstavuje prvé komplexné pojednanie o nateraz dostatočne nedocenenom poklade židovského hmotného kultúrneho dedičstva na území dnešného Slovenska, ktorým je Židovské múzeum v Prešove. Svojím rozsahom a zameraním je predkladaná práca najobsiahlejším dielom o židovských rituálnych predmetoch z územia Slovenska, ich zberateľstve a o vystavovaní.
