When Channels Change the World - Benefits of the Panama Canal in the Past and Its Future Rival in Nicaragua

Abstract:

Ve své práci jsem se zabýval přirozeným experimentem v podobě oznámení investic o rozšiřování Panamského průplavu a stavbě průplavu v Nikaragui. Po analýze makroekonomických ukazatelů (HDP na obyvatele, nezaměstnanost, přímé zahraniční investice apod.) jsem došel k závěru, že toto oznámení nemá na chod ekonomiky téměř žádný vliv (pokles o 0,4 procentních bodů, resp. o 0,3 HDP na obyvatele). Růst obou zkoumaných ekonomik naopak stále pokračuje ve stávajícím trendu, tedy že panamská ekonomika roste rychleji než v celkovém průměru ve zbylých zemí v regionu, nikaragujská ekonomika pomaleji. Vedlejší zkoumaný jev v této práci je analýza dopadů průplavu na panamskou ekonomiku v minulosti. Ty jsou navzdory očekávání velmi slabé, jelikož Panama za získání nezávislosti fakticky z průplavu neprofitovala (nemožnost přístupu k průplavu a tedy žádné výhody z něj plynoucí atd.). Z panamské historické zkušenosti by se měla poučit nikaragujská vláda.

Abstract:

The main goal in this thesis is the analysis of natural experiment in the form of investment notified by expanding the Panama Canal and building the Nicaragua Canal. The analysis of macroeconomic indicators (GDP per capita, unemployment, foreign direct investments etc.) showed that this announcement had almost no impact on the national economy (decrease of 0,4 percentage points, respectively 0,3 percentage points of GDP per capita). But both economies still keep growing in the current trend: Panamanian economy grows faster than the overall average in remaining countries in the region, Nicaraguan economy grows slower. Secondary purpose of the thesis is to analyze historical impacts of the Panama Canal on the Panamanian economy in the past. These impacts are very poor contrary to the expectations. In change of independence Panama did not benefit from the Canal de facto (lack of acces to the Canal and therefore no profits from the Canal). Nicaraguan governemnt should learn from the Panamanian history.
