Analysis of job satisfaction and motivation in language school teachers

Abstract:

Pracovní spokojenost a motivace zaměstnanců je téma, kterému se věnuje mnoho pozornosti, ale přestože je toto téma tak často zkoumané, výzkumů, které se zabývají pracovní spokojeností a motivací učitelů a lektorů, již tolik nenalezneme. Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou spokojenosti a pracovní motivace lektorů v jazykových školách. Cílem této práce bylo pomocí analýzy zjistit úroveň spokojenosti lektorů jazykových škol s jejich prací a identifikovat hlavní faktory jejich pracovní motivace. V teoretické části jsou vymezeny základní pojmy týkající se této problematiky a dále jsou zde uvedena specifika pracovní motivace učitelů. Na tuto část navazuje část metodologická, ve které jsou představeny vybrané postupy a metody použité pro zkoumání tohoto tématu. Pro účely výzkumu bylo použito metody hloubkových polostrukturovaných rozhovorů, kterým předcházelo podpůrné online dotazníkové šetření za účelem dosažení vyšší reliability a validity výzkumu a také detailnějšího zkoumání této problematiky. Takto získaná data byla následně interpretována pomocí otevřeného kódování a tematické analýzy, výsledky kterých jsou uvedeny v praktické části této práce. Praktický přínos této práce spočívá ve formulaci konkrétních doporučení pro jazykové školy, která vychází z výsledků výzkumu a následné interpretace získaných dat. Implementace navržených doporučení by měla mít pozitivní vliv na spokojenost lektorů v jejich práci a tím také pozitivně ovlivnit jejich retenci v jazykové škole.

Abstract:

Much attention has been given to the study of job satisfaction and motivation, however, despite the popularity of this topic among researchers, one has to search far and wide for research on job satisfaction and motivation of teachers. This thesis focuses on the analysis of job satisfaction and motivation in language schoolteachers. Specifically, this thesis aims to determine the level of satisfaction among language teachers and to identify the main factors of their job motivation. In the theoretical framework the individual concepts of job motivation and satisfaction are introduced first at a more general level, then specifically as they relate to teachers. The methodology used for the purposes of this thesis includes in-depth semi-structured interviews conducted with seven language teachers, as well as an online questionnaire which preceded the aforementioned interviews. The purpose of this questionnaire was to achieve higher reliability and validity of the thesis’ research, and to provide a more detailed understanding of the chosen topic. The data acquired through the main method of in-depth semi-structured interviews was then interpreted using a combined method of open coding and thematic analysis. The results of this analysis can be found in the final chapters of this thesis. The contribution of this thesis lies in the formulation of specific recommendations meant for the management of language schools. The implementation of said recommendations should have a positive effect on job satisfaction of language teachers employed by schools and on the retention rate of these workers observed by the language schools.
