Factors governing the allomorphy of the comparative degree marker: -ší vs. -ější

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je prozkoumat alomorfii komparativů v češtině z perspektivy distribuované morfologie a nanosyntaxe. Pozornost je věnována zejména analýze nulových tvarů komparativu a supletivního páru brzký – dřívější, který se zdá být pro dané teorie problematický. Práce však argumentuje tvrzením, že problematičnost tohoto příkladu je pouze zdánlivá a souvisí s tím, že adjektivum dřívější je derivováno z adverbia dříve. Pokud akceptujeme tuto analýzu, daný příklad je v důsledku s probíranými teoriemi v souladu.

Abstract:

The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis is to examine comparative allomorphy in Czech from the perspective of Distributed Morphology and Nanosyntax. Special attention is paid to the analysis of two, phenomena – the so called zero comparatives and the suppletive pair brzký – dřívější which means ‘early – earlier’ in English. The latter form appears to be a counterexample to the theories mentioned. This work, however, argues that the problematic nature of that example is merely apparent since the adjective dřívější is derived from adverb dříve (‘early’). If we accept this analysis, the counterexample turns out to be compatible with both theories (i.e. Distributed Morphology and Nanosyntax).
