FSP in Translation: A Research-based Study of FSP Deficiencies in Student Translations from English to Czech

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá teorií aktuálního větného členění a její rolí v rámci překladu. Jako výzkumný materiál byly použity studentské překlady z angličtiny do češtiny. Jelikož jsou principy větného pořádku slov v těchto jazycích odlišné, lze předpokládat, že během překladu z angličtiny do češtiny (jako do mateřského jazyka) se budou překladatelé dopouštět chyb v podobě změny tematické struktury věty. Zatímco lineární uspořádání věty je relativní a záleží na konkrétním jazyce, interpretativní uspořádání je absolutní, nezávisí na konkrétním jazyce a mělo by být v překladu zachováno. Změnou tematické struktury věty může dojít buď k posunu významu sdělení, nebo ke zpomalení procesu interpretace a třídění informací na straně čtenáře. Diplomová práce poskytuje teoretický podklad pro následný výzkum, a to vysvětlením základních konceptů teorie aktuálního větného členění, uvedením rozdílů mezi syntaktickým systémem anglického a českého jazyka, a také pojednáním o interferenci, chybách v překladu a v neposlední řadě zhodnocením dostupných zdrojů týkajících se zkoumané problematiky. Praktická část je založena na analýze studentských překladů odborných textů z angličtiny do češtiny, ve kterých jsou porovnávána interpretativní uspořádání originálních vět a překladových řešení. Cílem této diplomové práce bylo určit, které typy vět jsou pro začínající překladatele z hlediska aktuálního větného členění nejvíce problematické.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the theory of functional sentence perspective and its role in translation, working with material collected from student translations from English to Czech. Since the leading word-order principles in the two languages differ, it can be assumed that during the translation process from L2 English to L1 Czech, translators will be liable to commit mistakes by changing the thematic structure of the sentence. While the actual linear arrangement of the sentence is relative and depends on a particular language, the interpretative arrangement is absolute, does not depend on a particular language and that is why it should be preserved in translation. Shifts in the thematic structure can either change the meaning of the message, or slow down the reader’s interpretation and information sorting process. The thesis provides a theoretical background to the latter research by explaining the basic concepts of the FSP theory, commenting on differences between English and Czech syntactic systems and including information on interlanguage, interference and errors in translation plus an overview of available resources dealing with the researched topic. The practical part is built upon an analysis of student technical translations from English to Czech, in which interpretative arrangements of original and translated versions were compared. The aim of the thesis was to find out what kinds of sentences are the most problematic for translation trainees regarding FSP.
