Theory of serial fiction

Abstract:

V předloženém návrhu původní teorie seriálové fikce představuji funkčně-analytickou koncepci, jejíž ambicí je navrhnout efektivní nástroje k výzkumu fikce a vyprávění v televizním seriálu (přičemž pod pojmem série shrnují význam pojmů série i seriál). Pod seriálovou fikci lze zahrnout řadu zásadně odlišných narativních organizací, které jsem postihnul v kategorizaci pěti typů televizního seriálu. Nestačí proto zaměřovat se na analýzu narativních modů, které se budou typ od typu výrazně lišit. Je třeba přesunout hledisko analýzy z roviny narativních způsobů a technik na úroveň sémantické makrostruktury seriálové fikce: zaměřit se především na analýzu fikčního světa televizního seriálu. Fikční svět televizního seriálu (tj. makrostruktura seriálu) je v úplnosti nepoznatelná časoprostorová entita přístupná pouze prostřednictvím toku audiovizuálního textu, která tvoří totalitu entit materiální a duševní povahy. Jako takový je fikční svět seriálu epizodické struktuře nadřazený a stanovuje či modifikuje systém regulativních principů, v jehož rámci se v epizodách i napříč nimi vyprávění a příběhy realizují. Teorie seriálové fikce pak užívá k analýze seriálu tří klíčových nástrojů: heuristického konstruktu kognitivně aktivního diváka a fikční encyklopedie coby ústředního řídicího systému, do něhož kognitivně aktivní divák ukládá vše, co se z toku audiovizuálního textu a procesu fikcizace o fikčním světě a událostech v něm probíhajících dozví nebo co o něm usoudí na základě jasně stanovených podmínek. V konstrukci kognitivně aktivního diváka navazuji na takzvanou kognitivistickou filmovou teorii, v koncepci fikcizace jsem výrazně rozšířil pojetí narace v modelu teorie vyprávění Davida Bordwella. Bordwell tvrdí, že narace je regulativní proces poskytování vodítek, ve kterém divák ze syuzhetu (plot) buduje svou mentální konstrukci fabula (story). Já naopak říkám, že fikcizace coby regulativní tok poskytování vodítek postihuje během sledování televizního seriálu neustálou tenzi mezi syuzhetem, fabulí a fikčním světem. Zdaleka ne všechny informace o podobě seriálového světa podle mě spadají pod syuzhet a fabuli: existují seriály s mimořádně roztříštěným a mezerovitým syžetem, ale velice bohatým fikčním světem, na který se soustředí divákova kognitivní aktivita (Day Break, Lost). Sledování televizního seriálu je ale cyklický proces neustále přibývajících informací, které divák musí ve formě úsudků zpracovávat a ověřit, a následně systematicky a přehledně uspořádávat, aby je byl schopen kdykoli použít. Za nejpůvodnější část práce považuji svou koncepci fikční encyklopedie. Bez ní by podle mě sledování obrovské fikční plochy seriálu nebylo divácky realizovatelné (a analyticky postižitelné. Fikční encyklopedii strukturuji na singulární a relační hesla, textové pravidelnosti a scénáře (narativní, stylistické). Hesla zahrnují všechna vyvozená data v systemizovaných clusterech, zatímco pravidelnosti a scénáře divákovi zpřehledňují, jak přesně a v jakých ustálených uspořádáních se vyjevují v audiovizuálním textu: v jakém pořadí a podobě je fikcizace zpřístupnila, zpřístupňuje a pravděpodobně zpřístupňovat dále bude. Právě skutečnost, že jsou data ve fikční encyklopedii pečlivě uspořádána, divákovi umožňuje konstruovat a souběžně se zpracováváním toku dalších informací neustále obnovovat svou mentální představu fikčního světa. Protože divák na základě informací shlukujících se do událostí kognitivně rozpoznává syžet, je schopen tento permanentně přeuspořádávat v kauzální a chronologické souslednosti do fabulačních řad. – který volně vychází z východisek teorie fikčních světů (zejména Lubomíra Doležela a Umberta Eca), kognitivistické naratologie (především Davida Bordwella) a ruského formalismu – navrhuji ještě další třídy analýzy distribuovaných dat a úrovní světů, které divákovi i analytikovi umožňují rozčlenit a zpracovat celý systém televizního seriálu do strukturované podoby.

Abstract:

In submitted thesis, I present original theory of serial fiction within which I offer functionally-analytical conception that propose efficient tools for fiction and storytelling in television series (whereas the term series summarizes the meaning of both series and serial). The term of serial fiction includes a number of fundamentally diverse narrative organizations which I covered in categorization of five types of television series. Therefore, it is not enough to focus only on analysing narrative modes which actually differs from one type to another. It shifts the focus of analysis from the level of narrative modes and the techniques to the level of semantic macrostructure of serial fiction: that is fictional world of one concrete television series (further as macroworld). Fictional world is an spatio-temporal entity which is in its entirety incognosible and accesible by means of flow of audiovisual text. Fictional world than creates the allness of entities that are material and mental in their nature. As such, the macroworld of one concrete television series is superior to episodic structure and establishes or modifies the system of regulative principles, according to which the narration and stories are realized within episodes or across them. Theory of serial fiction then uses in order to perform an analysis three crucial instruments: heuristic concept of cognitively active viewer (CAV) and his fictional encyclopedia that forms a pivotal guiding system into which CAV shelves everything that he learns from flow of audio-visual text, process of (what I called) fictiosation and from ongoing events in audiovisual text or what CAV concludes from audiovisual text on the basis of obviously defined conditions. When definig CAV, I draw on so called cognitivist film theory. Using my concept of fictiosation extend David Bordwell’s conception of narration. Bordwell claims that narration is regulative process that provides the viewer with set of clues. Upon this process viewers construct from syuzhet (plot) his mental construction – fabula (story). On the contrary, I assert that fictiosation as a regulative administration of clues is during the viewing of televesion series implicated in continuous tension betwenn syuzhet, fabula and fictional world. In my opinion, not all information on the form of macroworld fall under syuzhet and fabula: there are television series with remarkable and gappy syuzhet but with rich fictional world whereupon is concentrated viewer’s cognitive activity. However, reception of television series is cyclic process with constantly increasing amount of information which requires CAV to elaborate and verify them in the form of inferences, Subsequently, these information needs to be systematically and digestedly placed in order, so they could be used later. I consider the concept of fictional encyclopedia to be one of the most original part of my thesis. Without it, it would be very difficult from either plainly viewing position or analytical one to trace the vast fictional areas of television series. In my comprehension, fictional encyclopedia is structured around singular a relational phrases, textual regularities and scripts (narrative and stylistical). These phrases includes all inferred data in systematized clusters. Regularities and screenplays then make clear how and in what stable lay-outs these data appear in audiovisual text: in what order and shape they were available, are avialable and propably will be. It is this matter of fact, that data are carefully structured in fictional encyclopedia which allows the viewer to construct his mental image of fictional world and while elaborating the flow of upcomming information to renew it at the same time. h freely draws on theories of fictional Works (especially conceptions from Lubomír Doležel and Umberto Eco), cognitive narratology (especially David Bordwell’s model) and russian formalism – suggests another phases of analysis of distributed data and layers of world which allows the viewer to divide and cultivate the whole system of television series into structured fashion.
