Audiovisual translation: selected aspects of webinar translation from Czech into English

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the translation of Czech to English subtitles to a webinar on child psychomotor development. The aim of the thesis is to describe the process of such translation and discuss the specifics that influence the translator's decisions. First, the situational factors that determine the skopos of the translation are identified together with the analysis of the different registers used by the speaker in order to select the best functional approach for the translation. This is followed by a commented translation of chosen problematic areas, which aims to offer solutions to these peculiarities, their advantages and disadvantages. The analysis of the situational factors is divided into the extratextual factors and intratextual factors, where each relevant factor is introduced and identified. For the register analysis, three short extracts from the ST were chosen to reflect different registers used. To discuss the most problematic or interesting translation issues from the webinar, further examples from the webinar are added to the translation of the three texts that were selected for the analysis. As the translation focuses on equivalence, the issues are divided into different categories according to the level of equivalence: lexical, grammatical, textual, pragmatic and semantic, each discussing the advantages or disadvantages of the selected solution. In many cases a perfect translation is not possible due to the challenges posed by the issues identified in the ST analysis, which offers many possibilities for further research into differences between the two languages on the various levels of equivalence.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá překladem titulků z češtiny do angličtiny k webináři v oblasti psychomotorického vývoje dětí. Hlavním cílem práce je popsat překladatelský proces, zejména specifika, která ovlivňují volbu konkrétních řešení. První část analýzy se zaměřuje na identifikaci situačních faktorů, které určují překladatelský skopos, společně s analýzou různých registrů použitých ve webináři. Díky tomuto přístupu lze zvolit funkční překladatelskou strategii. Následuje komentovaný překlad zvolených problematických oblastí za účelem nabídky řešení těchto zvláštností, jejich výhody a nevýhody. Analýza situačních faktorů je rozdělena na mimotextové a intratextové faktory, kde jsou jednotlivé relevantní faktory představeny a identifikovány. Pro analýzu registru byly vybrány tři krátké úryvky z celkového textu k porovnání různorodosti použitých registrů. Komentovaný překlad nabízí široký výběr problémů a zajímavostí nejen z vybraných textů, jež byly použity k analýze, ale z celého webináře. Jelikož se překlad zabývá ekvivalencí, jsou vybrané příklady rozděleny do různých kategorií podle úrovně ekvivalence, tedy lexikální, gramatická, textová, pragmatická a sémantická. Každá z nich nabízí výhody či nevýhody vybraných řešení. V mnoha případech je perfektní překlad nemožný kvůli faktorům, které byly identifikovány v prvotní analýze textu, čímž se nabízí mnoho možností k dalšímu výzkumu rozdílů mezí těmito dvěma jazyky na různých úrovních ekvivalence.
