The usage and functions of metaphors in Spanish specialized, semiespecialized and divulgative economics texts

Abstract:

The doctoral thesis studies the usage of metaphors and their functions in specialized, semiespecialized and divulgative economics texts from semantic, cognitive and pragmalinguistics perspective. The main purpose of this study is to demonstrate the principle of graduality of specialization and abstractness of economics texts on the basis of an analysis of different functions of metaphors. The analysis aims at the functions and frequency of all individual kinds of metaphors and at the way they are represented across the whole sphere of specialized communication. The objective was to link the concept of graduality, abstractness and specialization on the basis of the way the figurative language is used. For this purpose, various concepts of metaphors were studied, including the conceptual metaphors, which no longer fulfil the traditionally defined function of figurative language, as a mere ornament decorating the texts, but they are used for many other cognitive functions, especially as mental domains that facilitate the understanding of the abstract, unknown or less easily grasped specialized topics through images known from everyday life. Partial results of this thesis is the delimitation and definition of specialized language in relation to the general or common language, as well as the delimitation of highly specialized, semispecialized and divulgative language on the basis of factors which were defined and proved by examples from economics texts. Furthermore, a proposal of a typology and classification of economics texts was presented in accordance with the suggested principle of graduality, knowing, nevertheless, that it is impossible to establish any exact demarcation line (see the principle of continuum of specialized texts).

Abstract:

Dizertační práce studuje užití metafor a jejich funkce v odborných, poloodborných a divulgativních textech s ekonomickou tematikou ze sémantického, kognitivního a pragmalingvistického hlediska. Hlavním cílem práce je prokázat princip graduálnosti odbornosti a abstraktnosti ekonomických textů prostřednictvím analýzy rozdílných funkcí použitých metafor. V analýze textů jsme se zaměřili na funkci a četnost jednotlivých druhů metafor a na to, jakým způsobem jsou zastoupeny napříč celou sférou odborné komunikace. Cílem je propojit koncepci graduálnosti (různých stupňů odbornosti) v závislosti na způsobu užití obrazného jazyka. Za tímto účelem byly prostudovány koncepce metafor, včetně metafor konceptuálních, které již zdaleka neplní tradičně vymezenou funkci obrazného jazyka, a to jako pouhého ornamentu přikrášlujícího text, ale jsou využívány pro mnoho dalších kognitivních funkcí, a to zvláště jako myšlenkové domény, které zprostředkují abstraktní, neznámé, či hůře uchopitelné odborné téma prostřednictvím obrazů známých z každodenního života. Dílčími výsledky této práce je vymezení a definice odborného jazyka ve vztahu k obecnému jazyku, vymezení jazyka vysoce odborného, poloodborného a divulgativního na základě faktorů, které byly definovány a doloženy příklady z textů ekonomického zaměření. Dále byl předložen návrh vlastní typologie a klasifikace ekonomických textů v souladu s navrženým principem graduálnosti a s vědomím nemožnosti stanovení přesné dělící hranice (princip tzv. kontiua textů).
