The foundation of Herbens Čas and its development at the turn of 19th and 20th century

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá za pomocí historických metod vznik a vývoj časopisu Čas od jeho počátku v roce 1886, až po jeho násilné zastavení v roce 1915. Postupně popisuje jeho vznik jako čtrnáctideník a jeho proměnu v týdeník a následně deník. Zaměřuje se na to, jak se list stal tribunou realistické strany Tomáše Garriguea Masaryka a také na aféry, se kterými byl Čas spojován (například protesty proti Času po vydání prvního úvodníku „Naše dvě otázky“ od Huberta Gordona Schauera, hilsneriáda a další). Věnuje se také osobě Jana Herbena, který list založil a většinu doby jeho vydávání také vedl. V úvodu práce je charakterizováno období, ve kterém Čas vycházel, a následně je popsána tehdejší mediální scéna a legislativa upravující tisk. Přiblížen je také vznik, působení a ideály realistické strany, pro kterou se stal Čas hlavní spojnicí s veřejností. V následujících kapitolách je pak rozebrána struktura a forma periodika, počet jeho abonentů, jeho ekonomická situace a fungování jeho redakce.

Abstract:

This work using historical methods examines the foundation and development of Čas magazine since its inception in 1886 until his violent halt in 1915. Gradually, I described his creation as a biweekly magazine, and its transformation into a weekly magazine and then daily magazine. I focuse on how the it became a tribune of Tomas Garrigue Masaryks realistic party, and also on an affairs which Čas was associated with (for example protests against its the first editorial „Naše dvě otázky" by Hubert Gordon Schauer, Hilsner trial and others). I also details the person of Jan Herben, who founded the magazine and also led it for most of its existence. In the introduction I noticed characteristic of the period in which Čas was published, I described then the media scene and legislation governing the press. I also explained the creation, operation and ideals of the realistic party, for which Čas became the main line for connecting with the public. In the following chapters, I analyzed the structure and form of the magazine, the number of its subscribers, its economic situation and functioning of its redaction.
