Space, Power and Utopia: the Ideal City and its Society

Abstract:

Práce v sobě spojuje sociologický zájem o (městské) sociální utopie a o město a urbánní plánování. Jedním ze zdrojů moderní disciplíny urbánního plánování jsou klasické utopické texty. Utopisté, stejně jako později někteří architekti a urbanisté, často uplatňují ve svých pracích představu ideálního materiálního prostředí, které je předpokladem i výsledkem ideálního sociálního uspořádání: utopie ani urbanizmus nejsou „pouze“ plánováním městského prostředí, jsou i plánováním společnosti; předpokládají, že jisté prostředí je vhodné pro specifický typ obyvatel. Nejviditelněji se toto spojení projevuje u těch utopií, které je možno nazývat „městskými“, tzn. těch, jež zasazují společnost do konkrétně popsaných ideálních městských kulis. Hlavní cíle tohoto textu jsou dva: (1) uvést čtenáře do sociologické perspektivy a představit utopii jako specifický typ vědění a klasické utopické texty jako produkty tohoto vědění a (2) popsat formu ideálních sídel a zejména podobu ideální společnosti utopických textů, zachytit strukturu a organizace této společnosti a to, jaké jsou její hlavní charakteristiky. V závěru ukazuje příklady vlivu utopického vědění na disciplínu urbánního plánování respektive na podoby moderního města. Utopickými texty, kterými se práce zabývá, jsou především Moreova Utopie, Capanellův Sluneční stát a texty Roberta Owena a Chrlase Fouriera. Základní teoretické pozadí textu tvoří koncepce ideologie a utopie Karla Mannheima, Weberova koncepce protestantské etiky a jejího vlivu na moderní společnost a jeho přístup k otázce města a městské společnosti a pojetí společenské moci Michela Foucaulta.

Abstract:

This theses connects together the sociological interest in utopia and city and urban planning. Classical social utopias are one of the main sources of the discipline of urban planning. In the work of utopist as well as later some of the architects and urban planners is often exercised the idea of the influence of ideal material environment on the social conditions of the society; it is both: planning of urban environment and planning of its society. There exists a precondition that a specific (urban) milieu is adequate for a specific type of inhabitants. In case of so called urban utopias is this type of assumption evident. There are two main goals of the text: (1) to initiate the reader into the sociological perspective and to introduce utopia as a specific type of knowledge and (2) to describe the form of ideal city and especially the principles of ideal society depicted in utopian texts; to show the its structure, organization and main features. Finally the text offer some examples of the influence of utopian thought on the modern urban planning. The text deals primarily with these works: More’s Utopia, Campanella’s The City of the Sun, works and ideas of Robert Owen and Charles Fourier. The theoretical background is created mainly by Mannheim’s conception of ideology and utopia, Foucault’s concept of social power and Weber’s approach to city and protestant ethic.
