Anotácia:

Diplomová práce „Christianity and Racism in the work of William Apess” se zabývá dílem amerického indiána Williama Apesse, který žil v první polovině devatenáctého století. Jeho díla odrážejí konflikty mezi potomky evropských kolonistů a amerických indiánů. První část práce vymezuje historii Severní Ameriky od doby, kdy v sedmnáctém století připluli evropští kolonisti, aby zde založili nové kolonie. V této části je popsán i Apessův osobní život, zejména pak jeho dětství, které mělo značný vliv na jeho tvorbu. V druhé části se diplomová práce zabývá násilným zavedením evropského náboženství mezi americké indiány, které probíhalo pomocí křesťanských misionářů. Tato část se dále věnuje vlastnostem Metodismu, které vedly k inklinaci Williama Apesse k tomuto vyznání. Tato část také poukazuje na důvody, proč se Metodismus stal vyhledávaným náboženským směrem mezi utlačovanými etnickými menšinami a chudinou bílého obyvatelstva. Třetí část práce je zaměřena na téma rasismus a jeho následný dopad na osobní život Williama Apesse a jeho tvorbu. V závěrečné části jsou shrnuty zjištění, kterých bylo v rámci práce dosaženo.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis „Christianity and Racism in the work of William Apess” deals with the work of a Native American author William Apess who lived in the first half of the nineteenth century. His work reflects the conflicts between the descendants of the colonists mainly from England and Native Americans. The first part of the diploma thesis defines the history of North America from the time the first European colonists arrived in the seventeenth century in order to establish new colonies. This part also depicts personal life of William Apess especially his childhood since it influenced his writings. The second part is dedicated to violent implementation of European religion among the Native Americans through the medium of Christian missionaries. Furthermore, this part is devoted to the characteristics of Methodist movement that led Apess to incline towards Methodism. Moreover, this part refers to the motives that attracted the ethnic minorities as well as poor white Americans to this religious movement. The third part focuses on racism and the consequential impact the racism had on Apessʼs life and his work. In the conclusion, the thesis underlines the findings that were accomplished.
