The thesis examines living conditions of the working classes, in particular early textile factory workers, as pictured in Charlotte Brontë’s Shirley and Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South. The basic research questions are whether Brontë and Gaskell succeeded in mediating the ‘Condition of England’ to their prevalently upper and middle-class readers and thus in educating them, and whether the authors …more
