Diversity and phylogeny of monogeneans parasitizing Neotropical cichlids

Abstract:

Cichlidae (vrubozobcovití) jsou vysoce diverzifikovaná čeleď sekundárně sladkovodních ryb, která vykazuje disjunktní rozšíření. Neotropická Amerika je oblastí s nejvyšší druhovou diverzitou cichlid hned po Africkém kontinentu. Znalosti diverzity parazitů a jejich fylogenetické vztahy jsou v tomto areálu rozšíření cichlid velice limitovány. Monogenea, vysoce diverzifikovaní a převážně hostitelsky specifičtí žaberní parazité, jsou vhodným modelem pro studim koevoluce v parazito-hostitelských systémech, jelikož jejich fylogeneze často odráží fylogenetické vztahy hostitelských ryb a jejich vzájemné historické i ekologické kontakty. Celkem bylo na přítomnost monogeneí vyšetřeno 31 druhů cichlid, z těchto bylo parazitováno 20 druhů. Nalezeno bylo 30 druhů monogeneí rodů Gussevia, Trinidactylus a Sciadicleithrum, z nichž 17 druhů představuje druhy nepopsané, tj. potenciálně nové pro vědu. Fylogenetická rekonstrukce monogeneí parazitujících neotropické cichlidy odhadila tři dobře podpořené monofyletické skupiny, a ukázala, že rod Sciadicleithrum je polyfyletický a vyžaduje redeskripci. Kofylogenetické analýzy odhalily ve studovaném parazito-hostitelskému systému statisticky významný kofylogenetický signál, na kofylogenetické struktuře se významně podílelo 6 parazito-hostitelských asociací. Simulace koevolučních událostí odahlily, že nejčastějšími procesy speciace a diverzifikace monogeneí neotropických cichlid jsou hostitelský přeskok a duplikace.

Abstract:

Cichlidae is a highly diversified family of secondary freshwater fish that exhibits disjunct distribution. Neotropical America is the region with the second-highest diversity of monogeneans in cichlids following African continent. However, the parasitofauna of the cichlids is highly underexplored and the knowledge of the phylogenetic relationships among parasites in this area is limited. Monogenea, highly diversified and mainly host-specific gill parasites, are a suitable model for studying coevolution in host-parasitic systems, as their phylogenetic relationships often reflect the phylogenetic relationships of fish hosts, their historical and ecological contacts. A total of 31 species of cichlid species were examined for the presence of monogeneans, of which a total of 20 species were parasitized. On these cichlids, 30 species of monogeneans of the genera Gussevia, Trinidactylus, and Scadicleithrum were found, of which 17 species have not yet been described i.e., they represent potentially new species for science. Phylogenetic reconstruction revealed three well-supported monophyletic groups of monogeneas of Neotropic cichlids, however, the genus Sciadicleithrum was polyphyletic. Cophylogenetic analyses revealed a statistically significant cophylogenetic signal in the studied host-parasite system; 6 host-parasite associations contributed significantly to the cophylogenetic structure. Simulations of co-evolutionary events revealed that the main processes of speciation and diversification of monogeneans parasitizing Neotropical cichlids are host switch and duplication.
