Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je představení systému internátních škol, objasnění důvodů jejich účinnosti jakožto nástroje asimilační politiky, která se v Kanadě naplno rozvinula v 19. století, a jejich odrazu v literatuře. Práce poukazuje na trauma, které tento vzdělávací systém vyvolal, a vysvětluje, proč jsou psychické následky mezi původními obyvateli pociťovány dodnes, ačkoliv byla poslední škola uzavřena v roce 1996. Práce představuje nově vzniklý literární žánr, který se zabývá tématem internátních škol, a analyzuje knihu My Name Is Seepeetza od Shirley Sterling jako zástupce tohoto žánru.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to explore the residential school system, to clarify the reasons for its effectiveness as an instrument of the policy of assimilation, which developed in Canada in the 19th century, and to show how the theme of residential schools is depicted in literature. The thesis uncovers the trauma that this educational system evoked, and explains why current generation of Indigenous people suffer from psychological effects even today, although the last school was closed in 1996. The thesis examines the residential school literature and analyzes the book My Name is Seepeetza by Shirley Sterling.
