Developing Speaking Skills Using the Project Textbook at Lower Secondary School

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této diplomové práce je zkoumání rozvoje řečových dovedností u žáků druhého stupně základní školy, kde je jako hlavní výukový materiál používána učebnice Project. Teoretická část práce se zabývá nejen řečovými dovednostmi, ale i dalšími tématy, které s nimi souvisí, jako je například komunikace, interakce ve třídě, verbální a neverbální komunikace, komunikační kompetence, plurilingvní a plurikulturní kompetence. V souvislosti s výzkumnou částí jsou rovněž zmíněna témata zahrnující úzkost z mluvení cizím jazykem, ochotu komunikovat a roli mateřského jazyka v hodinách angličtiny. Empirická část je založena na kvalitativním výzkumu, který proběhl na nejmenované základní škole v Brně. Za účelem získání dat byla aplikována metoda triangulace, která zahrnovala observace v hodinách, analýzu materiálů a rozhovory s učiteli. Celkem bylo zkoumáno a následně analyzováno dvacet pět hodin ve výuce pěti různých učitelů. Následně byly provedeny rozhovory s učiteli, aby byl zjištěn i jejich úhel pohledu na danou problematiku. Celý výzkum probíhal v souvislosti s výzkumnými otázkami a cíli výzkumu, které tvoří jádro empirické části.

Abstract:

The main aim of this diploma thesis is to investigate the development of speaking skills using the Project textbook at lower secondary school. The theoretical part concerns not only speaking but also other topics related to this concept such as communication, interactions in the classroom, verbal and nonverbal communication, communicative competence and plurilingual and pluricultural competence. Furthermore, foreign language anxiety, willingness to communicate and the role of the mother tongue in English lessons are mentioned in accordance with the research. The empirical part is based on qualitative research conducted at one lower secondary school in Brno. In order to obtain the most relevant data, the triangulation method involving observations, materials analysis and interviews with teachers was used. In total, twenty-five lessons of five different teachers were observed and subsequently analysed. Finally, the teachers were interviewed so as to discover their perspectives on the given topic. The inquiry was conducted with respect to the research aims and objectives that form the central part of the empirical part.
