Coming out within the LGBT community: A differences between gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender

Abstract:

Tato práce je etnografickou studií LGBT+ asociace na nejmenované univerzitě ve Velké Británii a zabývá se postavením bisexuální a gay identity uvnitř LGBT+ komunity. Výzkum je založen na zúčastněném pozorování a na sedmi semi-strukturovaných rozhovorech s členy asociace. Ty byly zaměřené především na zkušenost procesu 'coming outu,' na který nahlížím jako na specifický přechodový rituál. Skrz analýzu procesu coming outu poukazuji na specifické postavení bisexuální identity vůči gay identitě. Takové postavení je patrné především díky charakteristickým kulturním představám připsaných bisexuální identitě zvenčí. Kategorizace bisexuální identity zahrnuje negativní postoje či projevy bifobie. Konkrétně je to především představa, že bisexuální identita je pouze přechodná situace a vede buď k přijetí gay identity, nebo 'zpět' k heterosexuální identitě, nebo že je bisexualita pouze záležitostí módy. To činí z bisexuality identitu méně opravdovou. Takové postoje pak představují specifické výzvy pro jedince s bisexuální identitou a mají vliv jak na průběh coming outu, tak na činnost univerzitní LGBT+ asociace. Uvnitř LGBT+ asociace jsou záměrně vytvářeny hranice mezi kategoriemi jednotlivých identit 'zviditelňující' především minoritní sexuální identity, jakou je i identita bisexuální. Takové hranice však nejsou tvořeny za účelem separace jednotlivých kategorií, ale za účelem vytvoření bezpečného prostoru a posílení pocitu sounáležitosti mezi jejich členy a solidarity mezi členy různých kategorií navzájem. To je pak v očích členů bisexuální komunity považováno jako za poskytnutí možnosti studentům lépe se začlenit do takové komunity a do LGBT+ asociace obecně, a také jako možnost adresovat problémy a překážky, se kterými se studenti s bisexuální identitou mohou setkat.

Abstract:

This paper reports the status of bisexual and gay identity within the LGBT+ association at an unnamed UK university. This project is an ethnographic study of the LGBT+ association. In this, I engaged in social events of the association and conducted semi-structured interviews with seven of its members, focusing on their experience of the process of 'coming out.' Through an analysis of the process of coming out as a unique rite of passage, I show that bisexual identity has a distinct position in relation to gay identity. This is due to the stereotypical cultural representation of bisexual identity, which can experience common negative and biphobic attitudes towards it. In particular, bisexuality is often understood as false identity, because it is seen only as a phase or as a result of popular trends. These unique cultural influences may affect the individual experience of the process of coming out, as well as the representation of bisexuals within the LGBT+ society and associated events. There are symbolic boundaries between the categories of sexual identities within the LGBT+ association, formed to highlight the minor categories such as bisexual identity. These boundaries are not meant to separate the categories, but rather to create 'safe space' for their members, to strengthen their feelings of belonging to each other as well as create solidarity amongst the community. From the point of view of the members of the bisexual community, this can create an opportunity to encourage other bisexual students to join both the bisexual community and the LGBT+ association in general. It also provides an opportunity to address issues and challenges currently faced by students with a bisexual identity
