Cooperativeness, Politeness, and Gender In-variation

Abstract:

Tato bakalářské práce se snaží ukázat, že ženy a muži nejsou homogenní skupiny, a proto by se neměly vyvozovat unáhlené závěry o rozdílnosti jejich mluvy. Kromě toho také obhajuje názor, že řeč mužů a žen se spíše podobá než různí. V první části práce vysvětluji základní pragmatické pojmy vztahující se k zaměření této práce, tedy princip kooperativnosti a strategii pozitivní zdvořilosti. Práce se následně zabývá výzkumy, které dokládájí, že ženy jsou zdvořilejší a více kooperativní než muži. Právě tyto studie utvrzují zdání, že ženy a muži jsou dva tábory hovořící jiným jazykem. K těmto bádáním tedy předkládám kvalitativní výzkumy s protichůdnými závěry. Nakonec představuji komplexní meta-analytický výzkum Janet Shibley Hydeové (2005), která testuje tzv. hypotézu genderových podobností a dokazuje tak, že verbální projevy mužů a žen jsou převážně obdobné.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis aims to demonstrate that men and women are heterogeneous groups and therefore the differences between their language styles cannot be over generalised. Furthermore, it also argues that there are more similarities than differences in their speech styles. In the first part of the thesis, I explain pragmatic concepts related to the thesis’s focus on the Cooperative Principle and positive politeness strategy. The thesis then deals with researches which show that women are more cooperative and positively polite than men. Particularly these claims enhance the impression that men and women are two groups speaking different languages. I subsequently provide contrasting evidence to the previous "difference framework" studies. In the end, I present a comprehensive meta-analytical research by Janet Shibley Hyde (2005), which tests the gender similarities hypothesis and proves that there are more similarities than differences in the male and female speech styles.
