Social Movements and the Internet: Indymedia in a Complex Network Society

Abstract:

Tato teoretická diplomová práce se zabývá vztahem sociálních hnutí a Internetu a možnostmi jeho teoretického uchopení. Autor tak nejdříve představuje koncepty sociálních hnutí vycházející z dvou konkurenčních paradigmat sociálních hnutí, které se rozvinuly nezávisle na sobě v USA (teorie mobilizace zdrojů) a Evropě (teorie nových sociálních hnutí). V této souvislosti autor zdůrazňuje neužitečnost trvající konkurence těchto dominantních paradigmat pro další studium sociálních hnutí v podmínkách rozvoje Internetu jako specifického informačního a komunikačního média. Na základě teorií A. Melucciho a M. Castellse autor naznačuje cestu k vytvoření syntetické teorie sociálních hnutí, která by byla schopná reflektovat význam Internetu pro procesy formování kolektivní identity a mobilizace strukturních zdrojů v podmínkách komplexní společnosti sítí. Závěrem je demonstrována teoretická užitečnost naznačené syntetické teorie sociálních hnutí na příkladu alternativního mediálního projektu Indymedia.

Abstract:

In general, this theoretical thesis is focused on relationship between social movement and Internet, and concerns theoretical possibilities of understanding this relationship. The author introduces two dominant approaches to the study of social movements (new social movement theory and resource mobilization theory), and stresses the uselessness of accepting just one of the dominant and competitive paradigms for the study of contemporary social movements and theirs media production. In author’s opinion the concepts of A. Melucci and M. Castells suggest the way how to bridge over the dominant paradigms of social movement theory, and create a synthetic theory of social movement which would be able to reflect the changed reality of complex network society. Usefulness of this synthetic theory for social movement studiesis then demonstrated on an example of recent Internet based project Indymedia, by stressing its theoretical value to describe both processes of collective identity construction and strategic resource mobilization within the context of social movement Internet’s use.
