Je tomu již více než osmdesát let od doby, kdy bylo poprvé popsáno spojení mezi chromozomálními abnormalitami a klinickým onemocněním u Downova syndromu. Od té doby byly aneuploidie popsány jako hlavní příčina potratů, abnormálního průběhu těhotenství a vrozených vývojových vad u lidí. The link between the clinical disorder named Down’s syndrome and the chromosome abnormality has been described for the first time some 80 years ago.
