The Analysis of the Translation of the Restaurant Menus into English

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je zanalyzovat způsoby, kterými jsou překládány jídelní lístky do angličtiny a chyby, popř. nepřesnosti, které se v překladech dělají. Práce je rozdělena do tří částí. V první, teoretické části, je čtenář seznámen se základními pojmy jako je jídelní lístek a jeho druhy anebo odborný překlad, dále s různými strategiemi překladu a také jak správně využívat slovníky. V analytické části je nejprve vybrán vzorek restaurací dle stanovených kritérií a z jejich jídelních lístků jsou následně analyzovány hlavní chody jak z pohledu způsobů překladu, tak z pohledu chybovosti překladu, včetně příkladů, které jsou opravovány. Na konci této části je shrnuto, jaké strategie a chyby se objevovaly nejvíce. Ve třetí, návrhové části, jsou uvedeny rady pro čtenáře, jak vylepšit stávající překlad, jak vytvořit kvalitní překlad anebo jak zachovat kvalitu překladu při častých změnách jídelního lístku. Část je koncipovaná tak, aby obsáhla všechny možné situace, ve kterých se čtenář nachází.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyze the ways in which menus are translated into English and mistakes that are made in translations. The thesis is divided into three parts. In the first, theoretical part, the reader is acquainted with principal concepts such as menu and types of menu, or types or professional translation, with various translation strategies and how to properly use dictionaries. In the analytical part is first selected a sample of restaurants according to the set criteria and from their menus are then analyzed the main courses both in terms of translation methods and in terms of translation mistakes, including examples that are repaired. At the end of this section is summarized which strategies and mistakes were most prevalent. In the third part, suggestions are given to readers on how to improve the existing translation, how to create a quality translation or how to maintain the quality of translation during frequent menu changes. The part is designed to cover all possible situations in which the reader finds himself.
