Montessori pedagogy in current teaching of English. A case study.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on Montessori pedagogy and its application in current teaching of English language. The thesis consists of a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part introduces the concept of alternative education and its history, followed by a chapter dedicated to Montessori pedagogy. The founder of this alternative method of education, Maria Montessori, is introduced and the method itself is presented. The core of the chapter is a list of the main principles on which the method is based. The third and final chapter of the theoretical part deals with foreign language teaching. The chapter includes differences between first and second language acquisition and presents the Montessori pedagogy's stance on this issue. The practical part of this bachelor thesis focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of using the Montessori method in English language teaching. The main theme is a research study conducted through a questionnaire sent to Montessori guides from fifteen primary schools in the Czech Republic and through observation in one of these schools. The main goal of the practical part was to determine whether it is a suitable method for teaching a foreign language. It was found that the advantages of Montessori pedagogy outweigh its disadvantages. Montessori pedagogy can be considered a suitable method for teaching English.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na Montessori pedagogiku a její využití v současné výuce anglického jazyka. Práce se skládá z teoretické a praktické části. V teoretické části je představen koncept alternativního školství a jeho historie a následně na to navazuje kapitola věnovaná Montessori pedagogice. Představena je zde zakladatelka této alternativní metody vzdělávání, Marie Montessori a poté samotná metoda. Stěžejní částí kapitoly je výčet hlavních principů, na kterých je metoda postavena. Třetí a zároveň poslední kapitola teoretické části se zabývá výukou cizího jazyka. V kapitole jsou obsaženy rozdíly mezi osvojováním prvního a druhého jazyka a je prezentován postoj Montessori pedagogiky k této problematice. Praktická část této bakalářské práce se soustředí na výhody a nevýhody použití Montessori metody při výuce angličtiny. Nosným tématem je výzkum provedený pomocí dotazníku rozeslaného Montessori průvodcům patnácti základních škol v České republice a také pomocí observace na jedné z těchto škol. Hlavním cílem praktické části bylo zjištění, zda se jedná o vhodnou metodu pro výuku cizího jazyka. Bylo zjištěno, že výhody Montessori pedagogiky převyšují její nevýhody. Montessori pedagogiku lze považovat za vhodnou metodu pro výuku angličtiny.
