Study of Dynamics and Accumulation of Manganese Content in Selected Plants of the Forest Ecosystem

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá sezónními změnami obsahu manganu v asimilačních orgánech vybraných rostlin v prostředí horských lesů. Asimilační orgány modřínu opadavého (Larix decidua Mill.), břízy bělokoré (Betula pendula Roth) a brusnice borůvky (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) byly odebírány během vegetační sezóny v letech 2010-2019 na trvalé výzkumné lokalitě u města Litvínov v Krušných horách. Lokalita se vyznačuje velkým množstvím celkového Mn v půdě (1062-2583 mg kg1), jehož zvýšená dostupnost pro rostliny je způsobena vysokou kyselostí, typickou pro půdy této oblasti. Všechny zkoumané rostliny na trvalé výzkumné ploše akumulovaly obsahy manganu blízké definici hyperakumulace (cca 10000 mg kg-1) a vykazovaly specifickou rychlost získávání Mn ve vegetačním období. Lze konstatovat, že brusnice borůvka (max. 11159 mg kg1), modřín opadavý (max. 14823 mg kg1) i bříza bělokorá (max. 11217 mg kg1) jsou druhy akumulující mangan, přičemž tempo akumulace je druhově odlišné. Práce představuje nejpodrobnější soubor výsledků obsahu Mn v rostlinném materiálu pro charakterizování sezónních změn koncentrací Mn v listech. Dalším faktorem, který ovlivňuje příjem Mn rostlinou, jsou srážky. Zejména na srážkách v zimním období byl závislý obsah Mn v listech břízy bělokoré na začátku vegetační doby. Akumulace Mn není výlučně doménou těchto studovaných rostlin (břízy bělokoré, brusnice borůvky a modřínu opadavého), ale vysoké a v průběhu sezóny rostoucí obsahy Mn byly zjištěny i v listech ostružiníku křovitého (Rubus fruticosus L.), dubu zimního (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) a buku lesního (Fagus sylvatica L.) V rámci plošného monitoringu oblasti východního Krušnohoří byly založeny lokality pro odběr asimilačního aparátu brusnice borůvky, břízy bělokoré a vzorků humusového a minerálního horizontu. Z počátečních výsledků je možné konstatovat, že hlavním faktorem ovlivňující obsah Mn v půdě a následně v rostlině, je především geologie podloží, jelikož půdy vzniklé na kyselých granitech (granitovém porfyru) mají vyšší mobilitu Mn2+, a zároveň nižší obsah Mg2+ v těchto horninách poskytuje výjimečné prostředí pro akumulaci Mn rostlinami. Opačně působí půdy, které jsou založeny na bazaltech: ty mají zásaditý charakter s vysokým obsahem Mg2+, a proto je zde příjem Mn2+ výrazně redukován. Je možné, že obsah Mn v listech je důsledkem acidifikace z antropogenní činnosti, která působila odlišně na půdy s různou geologií a geochemií podložních hornin.

Abstract:

The work deals with seasonal changes in manganese content in the assimilation organs of selected plants in the mountain forest environment. Assimilative organs of European larch (Larix decidua Mill.), silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) and common bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) were collected during the growing seasons in 2010-2019 at a permanent research area near the town of Litvínov in the Ore Mountains. The site is characterized by a large amount of total Mn in the soil (1062-2583 mg kg1). The increased availability of Mn for plants is due to the high acidity typical for the soils of this area. All three investigated plants on the permanent research area accumulated manganese contents close to the definition of hyperaccumulation (approx. 10000 mg kg1). The investigated plant species showed a specific rate of Mn acquisition in the growing season. It can be stated that bilberry (max. 11159 mg kg1), European larch (max. 14823 mg kg1) and silver birch (max. 11217 mg kg1) are manganese-accumulating species, while the rate of accumulation differs among species. This work presents the most detailed set of results of Mn content in plant material for the characterization of seasonal changes in Mn concentrations in leaves. In general, environmental monitoring of foliar element content should include several samplings per season, as date of sampling is crucial for element contents in plants. Another factor that affects Mn uptake by the plant is rainfall. In particular, the Mn content in silver birch leaves at the beginning of the growing season was dependent on precipitation in the winter. Mn accumulation is not exclusively the domain of the three mainly studied plants (birch, bilberry, and larch), but high Mn contents increasing during the season were also found in blackberry (Rubus fruticosus L.), sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). As part of monitoring of the eastern Ore Mountains, localities were established for sampling the assimilation apparatus of bilberry, birch and samples of the humus and mineral horizon. From the initial results, it is possible to conclude that the main factor influencing the Mn content in the soil and subsequently in the plant is the bedrock geology, as soils formed on acid granites (granite porphyry) have higher Mn2+ mobility, and at the same time, the lower Mg2+ content in these rocks provides exceptional environment for Mn accumulation by plants. Soils formed on basalts have the opposite effect: they have a basic character with a high Mg2+ content, and therefore Mn2+ intake is significantly reduced here. It is possible that the content of Mn in the leaves is a consequence of acidification caused by anthropogenic activity, but this acted differently on soils with different geology and geochemistry of underlying rocks.
