Memories of Expulsion of Germans in the Light of the collective Trauma of Czechs

Abstract:

Poválečný odsun Němců z Československa a s ním spojené tragické události se vryly do kolektivní paměti a nabouraly kulturní vzorce a lokální identity mnohých Čechů. Práce si klade za cíl empiricky prozkoumat prvky kolektivního traumatu ve vzpomínkách pamětníků na odsun. Jedním z východisek je koncept kolektivního traumatu pachatelů Bernharda Giesena. Role Čechů se dle vyprávění pamětníků jeví spíše jako role přihlížejících, kteří sice souhlasili s odsunem, avšak zavrhují jeho násilnou formu. Odsun Němců způsobil nabourání prvorepublikových hodnot, rozdělil mnohé rodiny a zapříčinil dlouhodobé dopady na pohraniční lokality a krajinu. Velké množství Němců i Čechů bylo vykořeněno ze svého domova. Vztah mezi Čechy a Němci byl poznamenán vzájemnými stigmatizacemi. Po roce 1989 bylo tabuizované téma odsunu Němců otevřeno, což způsobilo šok a rozpor mezi novými zjištěními a obrazem minulosti. Bylo nutné se s dopady události vypořádávat. Na každodenní úrovni se projevily inovační strategie přeshraniční spolupráce a navazování přátelství. Uvedené prvky lze popsat jako symptomy lokálních traumat, neboť byly zasaženy zejména pohraniční lokality a krajiny, kde žilo velké množství Němců.

Abstract:

The expulsion of Germans after the Second World War and its tragic events engraved on collective memory and disturbed cultural patterns and local identities of many Czechs. The thesis aims at empirical study of attributes of collective trauma in memories of eyewitnesses. One of the bases of the work is the concept of collective trauma of perpetrators by Berhnard Giesen. The role of Czechs can be seen more as a role of bystanders, who agree with the expulsion but reject its violant form. The Expulsion of Germans caused erosion of values, separated many families and brought about long-lasting impacts on border areas. Many Germans and Czechs lost their homes. The relationship between Cezchs and Germans was affected by mutual stigmatization. After the year 1989 the issue of expulsion of Germans was opened and this opening caused the shock and discreapancy between new findings and the picture of past. It became necessary to cope with those impacts. Innovative strategies of cross-boarder cooperation and friendships were established on the level of everyday interaction. Mentioned features can be described as characteristics of local traumas because they affected many border localities, where many Germans lived.
