Long-term stay abroad and its effect on the attitudes of students of the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University towards migrants in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zjišťuje pomocí kvalitativní metody focus group, zdali a jak jsou postoje studentů Fakulty sociálních studií Masarykovy univerzity (FSS MU) ovlivněné dlouhodobou zkušeností s cizinci mimo Českou republiku. Respondenti focus group byli na základě doby pobytu v zahraničí rozděleni do dvou kategorií – kategorii zahraničí a kategorii domov. Výsledky focus group byly analyzovány a porovnány mezi oběma kategoriemi a srovnány s postoji obyvatel České republiky a dalších evropských zemí. Analýza postojů studentů FSS ukázala, že zahraniční zkušenosti působí spíše pozitivně při vytváření tolerantních postojů. Studenti FSS, kteří jsou v kontaktu s cizinci, se některými svými postoji liší od postojů většinové české populace a blíží se k tolerantním a otevřeným evropským zemím. Kromě osobní zkušenosti však ovlivňuje postoje mnoho dalších faktorů, jako je vliv rodiny, prostředí nebo historie země. Proto se postoje studentů shodují s postoji české majority v požadavku na kulturní unifikaci.

Abstract:

Diploma thesis is using qualitative method of focus group and explores, whether and how are the attitudes of students of the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University (FSS MU) affected by long-term experience with foreigners outside the Czech Republic. Respondents of focus group were split into two categories based on the period of their stay abroad – category abroad and category home. The results of focus group were analyzed and compared between the two categories as well as with the attitudes of inhabitants of the Czech Republic and other European countries. Analysis of the attitudes of FSS' students showed that abroad experience has rather positive effect on creating tolerant attitudes. Students of FSS who are in touch with foreigners, differ in some attitudes from the attitudes of the majority of Czech population and are closer to being tolerant and open European countries. Apart from personal experience are attitudes influenced by many other factors such as influence of family, environment or the country's history. Therefore student's attitudes agree with the attitudes on Czech majority in the requirement for cultural unification.
