A Guide to the History of Old Russian Liturgical Chant

Abstract:

Předložená diplomová práce je prvním českým pokusem o soustavné zpracování dějin staroruského bohoslužebného zpěvu. Mapuje autonomní vývoj staroruského zpěvu od jeho počátků v kyjevské Rusi (přelom 10. a 11. století) až do radikální „europeizace“ ruské církevní kultury v období moskevského patriarchy Nikona (polovina 17. století). Zaměřuje se zvláště na jednohlasý znamennyj raspěv a jeho svébytnou neumatickou notaci a upozorňuje i na originální staroruskou polyfonii, jež je založena na zcela jiných principech než polyfonie evropská. Muzikologické poznatky jsou v diplomové práci zasazeny do dobového politického, kulturního a náboženského kontextu. Součástí práce je bohatá notová příloha.

Abstract:

The submitted thesis presents the first ever Czech attempt on systematic processing of history of the Old Russian Liturgical Chant. It describes the autonomous development of the Old Russian form of singing from its beginnings in Kievan Rus (turn of the 10th and 11th century) to the radical “Europeanisation” of the Russian religious culture in the period of Moscow Patriarch Nikon (mid-17th century). It focuses particularly on monophonic Znamennyi raspev and its distinctive neumatic notation, as well as it draws attention to the original Old Russian polyphony, which is based on completely different principles than the European polyphony. The musicological findings of the thesis are put into political, cultural and religious context of that time. An integral part of the work is a rich source of sheet music included in the Annex.
