Upper-Secondary School Grammar Instruction in the Czech Republic and Italy; a comparative study

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá středoškolskou výukou anglické gramatiky v Itálii a České republice. Práce si klade za cíl popsat způsoby vyučování gramatiky v těchto dvou zemích a definovat případné rozdíly a podobnosti mezi nimi. Dále se práce pokouší zjistit, jaký je postoj středoškolských studentů ke gramatice a definovat faktory, které jej mohou zlepšovat či zhoršovat. Zaměřuje se zejména na to, jak užívané metody výuky gramatiky ovlivňují postoje studentů ke gramatice. Ve snaze nalézt odpovědi na tyto otázky bylo uskutečněno osm polostrukturovaných rozhovorů: se dvěma italskými učiteli, a dvěma českými učiteli, se dvěma italskými žáky a dvěma českými žáky. Následně byly tyto rozhovory analyzovány dle postupů kvalitativního výzkumu. Zjištění, které z analýzy vyplynulo ukazuje na to, že ačkoliv se metody výuky gramatiky v Itálii a Česku liší, postoj studentů ke gramatice je téměř totožný. Dále se ukázalo, že všichni tázaní studenti se shodli na faktorech, které zlepšují jejich přístup ke gramatice tím, že ji činí zábavnou a poutavou. Tyto faktory byly definovány jako: používání autentických a neučebnicových materiálů, vysoká úroveň zapojení žáků, široká škála užívaných aktivit a cvičení, využití informačních technologií, a upřednostnění procvičování před teorií. Tento výzkum a jeho zjištění může sloužit k hlubšímu pochopení aspektů výuky, které významným způsobem ovlivňují přístup studentů ke gramatice. Tyto poznatky mohou být aplikovány ve výuce gramatiky na středních školách v Itálii i České republice.

Abstract:

The present thesis deals with the topic of secondary school English grammar instruction in Italy and in the Czech Republic. The thesis aims to describe the type of grammar instruction in both countries and to define similarities and differences between them. Moreover, the thesis attempts to understand secondary school students’ attitudes towards grammar and to define the factors which might improve or worsen them. More specifically, the thesis focuses on the connection between a type of grammar instruction employed and students’ attitudes. There were eight semi-structured interviews conducted in order to answer the research questions; two with Italian teachers, two with Italian students, two with Czech teachers, and two with Czech students. The interviews were subsequently analysed in a qualitative manner by coding the data into categories. The findings reveal that despite the fact that grammar is not taught in both countries in an identical way, Italian and Czech students have nearly identical attitudes towards it. Additionally, all the interviewed students agreed on the factors that increase their positive perception of grammar by making it more enjoyable and engaging. Such factors were identified as follows: the use of authentic and non-textbook materials, high interactivity of grammar lessons, variety of implemented activities, the presence of technology, and focus on practice over theory. The current research and its findings might help to understand in more detail the different aspects and factors which have an impact on students’ attitudes towards grammar. These aspects might be implemented more frequently in secondary school grammar lessons in the Czech Republic as well as in Italy.
