Ecology of dragonflies of the genera Cordulegaster and Aeshna of selected regions of Western Palaearctic region

Ekologie vážek rodu Cordulegaster a Aeshna ve vybraných oblastech západního palearktu

Abstract:

Předložená práce studuje tři různé oblasti ekologie vážek. Nejprve se porovnávaly morfologické parametry holarktické vážky Aeshna juncea (Linnaeus, 1758) (Aeshnidae) vyskytující se v různých zeměpisných šířkách v západním palearktu. Analýza populací druhu A. juncea pocházejících z Nizozemska, Francie a Íránu ukázala, že velikost těla byla výrazně větší u íránských jedinců než u evropských populací. Další část práce byla zaměřena na studium letové aktivity a odhadu velikosti populace druhu Cordulegaster heros Theischinger, 1979 (Cordulegastridae), endemické vážky jihovýchodní Evropy. Druh uvedený v příloze II a IV směrnice Rady Evropské unie č. 92/43/EHS se těší značné pozornosti biologů ochrany přírody. Tento druh se na Slovensku vyskytuje v přirozených lesních potocích v pahorkatinách a jeho výskyt ve využívané krajině není samozřejmý. Studium prokázalo, že druh má dva vrcholy letové aktivity za den (bimodální aktivita), a to v dopoledních a odpoledních hodinách, a také fáze aktivity v časných ranních hodinách a za soumraku. Pro výpočet charakteristik populace byla použita metoda opakovaného odchytu označených jedinců. Podíl opakovaných odchytů označených jedinců byl ve prospěch samců, jelikož samice se zdržovaly častěji mimo vodní habitat. U samců byl poměr opakovaných odchytů 53,72%, zatímco u samic 11,11%. Použitý nejvhodnější model odhadl velikost populace na 400,62 pro samce a 53,15 pro samice. Odhadovaná velikost populace naznačuje, že studovaná lokalita je kvalitním habitate, avšak pro přesnější odhady by byly potřebné robustnější datové matice. Dále se hodnotil vliv lesního hospodaření a inženýrských staveb na populaci druhu Cordulegaster heros v České republice. V biotopech druhu bylo zaznamenaných sedm ohrožujících faktorů, přičemž všechny měly jen lokální účinky. Pokud se bude pokračovat v současném systému hospodaření, budou vhodné podmínky pro zachování populace zajištěny. V poslední části byla analyzovaná ochranářská hodnota jednotlivých lokalit zařazených do jedné ze čtyř vybraných typů antropogenních biotopů na Slovensku na základě biotického indexu vážek (DBI). Ochranářská hodnota lokalit byla stanovena na základě součtu hodnot základních ukazatelů DBI studovaných vážek. Analýza zobecněných lineárních smíšených metod ukázala, že nejnižší průměrné hodnoty DBI mají vodní přehrady, zatímco nejvyšší mají zaplavené lomy, za kterými následují pískovny a štěrkoviště.

Abstract:

Hereby presented thesis focuses on three different research fields in the ecology of odonates. At first, I examined the latitudinal cline effects on the body size and other morphological parameters of the Holarctic Aeshna juncea (Linnaeus, 1758) (Aeshnidae). The analysis of three distinct populations of A. juncea from the Netherlands, France and Iran revealed, that the body size was significantly bigger of the Iranian individuals, than the European populations. Secondly, the thesis aimed to study the diel pattern and the population size of the southeast European endemic Cordulegaster heros Theischinger, 1979 (Cordulegastridae). The species listed in the Annex II and IV of Council Directive no. 92/43/EHS requires notable attention of conservationists. The species is confined to pristine streams closed in highland forests and its persistence in utilized landscape is not self-evident. The research unveiled that the species is characterised by two peaks of flight activity per day, in the fore- and afternoon, respectively (bimodal activity pattern) with periods of activity at early morning and dusk. To estimate the population characteristics of the species mark-release-recapture method was used. The recapture rate of marked individuals was male biased since the females avoided the breeding site more frequently. For the males, the recapture rate was 53.72% whilst for females it was 11.11%. The best model applied estimated the size of the population up to 400.62 for males and 53.15 for females. The estimated size of the population of the species suggest that the natal site is a high-quality habitat, however more robust data matrices is needed to properly address this question. Furthermore, the effect of forest management methods and engineering structures on the population of C. heros had been assessed in the Czech Republic. Seven factors were noted as threatening in the speciesʼ localities and almost all of them had only point effects. If the current management system is continued, the best conditions for the conservation of the C. heros population are created. And finally, the suitability of four types of man-made habitats based on Dragonfly Biotic Index (DBI) of odonates was analysed in Slovakia. Odonates possessed sum of values of three basic subindices to reveal the proportional representation of generalist and specialist (high conservation value) species. The GLMM analysis showed that the lowest average values of DBI had water dams, while the highest had flooded quarries, followed by sandpits and gravel quarries.
