Serbia’s Struggle on the Path Towards Its Membership in the European Union

Abstract:

Přístupový proces kandidátských zemí do Evropské unie nemá přesně vymezený časový rámec, jelikož přístup ke každé zemi je individuální. Její dynamika a povaha závisí na vzájemně závislých faktorech, které určují postup integrace. Tempo přístupového procesu závisí jak na kondici země ucházející se o členství, tak na možnostech a ochotě přijmout členské státy nové země do evropských struktur. Tento proces je často časově náročný a zdlouhavý, ale především vyžaduje zapojení obou stran. Vzhledem k vývoji přístupového procesu v průběhu desetiletí vnímá každá kandidátská či kandidátská země členství v EU odlišně, plnění od něj požadovaných podmínek členství a řešení jednotlivých politických problémů. Důvěryhodná politika rozšiřování EU přispívá k budování stabilní, bezpečné a prosperující Evropy. Je však třeba připomenout, že členství v EU vyžaduje od státu řadu politických, ekonomických a sociálních reforem, aby byl připraven přijmout práva, výsady a povinnosti vyplývající z členství. Cílem tohoto příspěvku je zhodnotit současný stav literatury týkající se nejdůležitějších témat složitého zápasu Srbska o potenciální budoucí členství v Evropské unii, přičemž se zaměřuje na aktuální vnitřní i vnější otázky. *(Google Translate)

Abstract:

The accession process of candidate countries to the European Union does not have a strictly defined time frame, as the approach to each country is individual. Its dynamics and nature depend on the mutually dependent factors that determine the progress in integration. The pace of the accession process depends both on the condition of the country applying for membership, as well as on the possibilities and willingness to admit the member states of the new country to European structures. This process is often time-consuming and lengthy, but most of all it requires the involvement of both parties. Due to the evolution of the accession process over the decades, each candidate or applicant coun-try perceives EU membership differently, the fulfillment of membership conditions required of it, and the resolution of individual political issu-es. A credible EU enlargement policy contributes to building a stable, safe and prosperous Europe. However, it should be remembered that EU membership requires a number of political, economic and social re-forms to be carried out by the state so that it is ready to accept the rights, privileges and obligations of membership. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the current state of literature re-garding the most crucial topics on Serbia’s complex struggle in poten-tial future membership of the European Union, while focusing on both internal and external issues at hand.
